Just when I think that I could not love this show more, they go ahead and mention rally girls having threesomes with football players. FTW!
Tim and Tyra having sex at the supermarket = hot! Random, but... HOT. I don't usually notice much about the mechanics of TV, but I did notice that this week Tim was shot entirely from other characters' perspectives: Billy's; Lyla's, when she went to see him at his house; Jason's, at the game. Usually I'm so wrapped up in empathizing with Tim's emo pain that I fail to see what a childish and ungrateful prick he can be. In general, I found this to be a really clever and nuanced episode.
I don't like the cliched steroids storyline (although I suppose it had to happen), but I literally squirmed in my seat when the collection at the church went round. Sooo fucked up! I could actually feel the pressure on Smash to succeed. (Also a great way to highlight how tough it is to be the black community's great hope, without resorting to TV's usual hamfisted It Is Hard To Be A Black Man, OMGZ racial storylines.)
I think what I like most about this show is how it takes the time to show the small scenes. Like the scene where Smash almost got caught stealing -- it could easily have cut off there, but instead we got follow it through and witness Matt's feeling of betrayal that he had vouched for his friend and been let down. Lovely.
I actually gasped when Jason punched Tim. Gah. Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
