I love me some chick music. And so, apparently, do a lot of middle-aged men from Norfolk.
Tina Dico, with Sophie Barker @ the Norwich Arts Centre
This was my first time at the Norwich Arts Centre. It was pretty damn cool. No misrepresentation: it was very... artsy. A converted church, with a sweet little garden outside. And situated in the ye olde part of Norwich, which I always vaguely forget exists. (I rag on Norwich a lot, but it really is very pretty.)
Also: clearly an awesome place to see bands if you're interested in stalking them. The dressing room was right across from the ladies' toilets (I saw Tina Dico skulking nearby; thought, huh, you're Tina Dico!; then I went to pee). In short: more bands I like need to play there. Yeah, I'm sure that'll happen. :/
I'm not sure I had a clear idea of what Tina Dico's fan base would be. (Zero 7 fans are probably too stoned/strung out to make it to the Norwich Arts Centre, right? Oooh, burn. ;) Obviously, in Denmark it would be: everyone. In the UK, it's apparently middle-aged men (!). There were maybe ten people under 30 there. Odd, very odd.
Sophie Barker has a gorgeous voice. I think I watch too much dreck like 'The X Factor' and am too forgiving of singers who are slightly off-key, so I tend to be surprised when singers can genuinely SING. And Sophie's voice is... transcendent *ahem* very pleasant.
I started to feel a bit itchy at the idea of standing on my feet for three hours listening to very mellow/downtempo acoustic chick music. (It's the kind of music that makes you want to curl up in a blanket with some camomile tea, y'know?) But Tina Dico had a lot of stage presence; she was very lively and uninhibited, even while singing fairly pared-down songs. Also, I'm shallow and she's pretty.
Highlight: She said that she always leaves an open spot in the middle of her set and plays whatever she feels like. Last night she decided to play 'Head Shop', which is my faaavourite. So I was pretty chuffed at that. :D Other highlights were 'Give In', which seemed poppier and more fun than it is recorded, and the encore of 'My Mirror', which is a song I just wanted to fall into.
