Two quick Tianyu stories.

Both of these stories took place at Carnegie Mellon University in Doherty Hall room 1212. This was lecture hall at CMU where when upon entering the room, you would come to a partition to walk around. Upon walking around that, you would immediately see a typical lecture hall with seats and desks. The partition itself was simply the backside of a large set of chalkboards. Tianyu and I had many classes in that room. It was easy to tell whenever he walked in the room. Because for those sitting at their desks, you could see the shoes of whomever was walking in from underneath the chalkboard. Tianyu always wore buckled boots.

The first story is about one random day at CMU. Tianyu and I shared many freshman classes together: Calculus, Physics, and Material Science & Engineering. The first two classes were in the mornings, the latter class in the afternoon. Being friends since the 2nd day of college, we always hung out together at lunch.

Well, one day during materials science and engineering, I saw Tianyu walk in, seeing his boots of course. When he sat down next to me, however, I also noticed that he had an earring in his ear. I thought this was strange, because not only had I just seen him earlier in the day without an earring, I was fairly certain that he didn't have a pierced ear.

Well it turned out that after lunch, he went to check out some of the sidewalk vendors on campus and saw that some of them were selling earrings. He decided to buy an earring and pierce his own ear in his bathroom with a bar of soap to press against the other side.

The second story involves Tianyu, our good mutual friend John, and me. In our sophomore year in college, we all shared a class called Principles of Mathematics. This is the class that makes you wonder if you actually like math or not. The first question of our homework assignment (and yes, I still remember this) was, "Prove that the well ordering property of the positive integers implies the Principle of Mathematical Induction." For me, the class went downhill from there.

Anyways, though many hours of my life were wasted on that class, one memory of that class still remains. John and I had sat down together, and we were wondering where Tianyu was, since class was just beginning. As with most classrooms at CMU, there was no air conditioning in this room and the windows were kept open to help keep us cool. John and I had taken to taking desks near the left side window. Well part way through the class, we had heard a noise, and when I looked, it appeared that a backpack had come in through the window. I turned to John and gave him a WTF look. Then moments later, Tianyu was pulling himself through the window. The noise and commotion had gotten the professor to stop talking and everyone was watching him come in.

It turned out that the window was accessible from the outside via fire escape stairway, and Tianyu's class immediately before was from that general direction, so in order to save time from actually walking around the building to get to the door, he decided to climb in through the window. In later classes, I'd seen some students walking OUT that window to get to their next class, no doubt inspired by Tianyu's entrance.
