♫ Noo NOO noo noo, noo NOO noo noo. . .♫♪
Yes campers, the Large Hadron Collider is supposed to go online Wednesday, and this will be a major breakthrough in subatomic particle physics research. It will be the largest atomic particle acelerator on Earth, and it cost $9 billion to construct deep underground along the border of France and Switzerland.
Interestingly, there is a small chance that the accelerator could create tiny black holes that could destroy planet Earth, (or create runaway strangelets or magnetic monopoles) and that has enough folks up in arms that they filed lawsuits to attempt to delay the development of the accelerator. A former nuclear safety officer, Walter Wagner, filed a suit in Hawaii (read about it here:

This reminds me of the folks who thought that the first A-bomb's chain reaction would set the sky on fire and burn up the atmosphere.
The only thing about that theory that concerned me when I learned about it, was that scientists on the Manhattan Project had not thoroughly disproved that theory before they set off the Bomb, yeeps!
Odds are nearly 100%, that the accelerator won't generate mini black holes, and even if it did, they would be of no consequence whatsoever, say researchers in the know.
I predict a pulp fiction piece about this phenomenon soon, campers, and maybe even a B movie!
Black Holes from Earth, Terminal Point, or something along that vein.
Hee!
Anyway, the big test day is Wednesday, and I am curious about how things go. Will it work? Will it fail?
I'll be staying tuned to this story. . . .
