where do i go from here?

as i struggled to write up my SMART goals for my annual review, i turned to google for some inspiration and ideas. as i browsed the hundreds of sites defining these goals, i noticed many used examples of personal goals (i.e. losing weight, publishing a book, joining social activities, etc. ) in addition to the business goals i've been so used to setting.

this got me thinking-when was the last time i had a distinct personal goal? probably not since the fall of 2005 when i decided to pursue my master's degree. granted, this took nearly three years to complete, so i didn't have much time to pursue many other ventures. but i graduated over a year ago and feel as if i have been just floating through life ever since.

moving out on my own or passing the lifeguard rectification challenge were major accomplishments, but those too were completed well in the past. i've been feeling a bit lost lately. maybe it's a sense of boredom. maybe it's a yearning for something to keep me occupied. i've always lived my life on the go, and with little going on right now, i simply do a whole lot of nothing after work these days. i feel i'm up for a challenge.

after talking with some coworkers, i found out linda is training to walk a marathon in november, and lauren is working toward a black belt in karate. these stories inspired me to strive for something i've always thought out of reach.

more than eight years ago, i tore out a small swim training program from a fitness magazine as i sat in the stuffy pool at bally's. back then, i had this ambition of becoming a superb swimmer. fast forward to today, and i'm still just mediocre. this program has been hanging on my bulletin board ever since, and every few years i revisit it only to give up after day one. on monday, i dusted off the old piece of paper and took, yet again, another shot. i've completed two days of the 12 week program. after completely the program, i hope to eventually find a swim-a-thon event i can join. or perhaps i'll look more into joining the master's swim club. but first, i need to improve my endurance and get back in the game.

that being said, i am determined to set some goals for the coming months. seeing i never made any new years resolution, now is as good a time as any. here's my attempt to set some personal SMART goals.
  • i am going to complete my swim training program by september 12, at which time will be able to swim for 90 continuous minutes.
  • i am going to fully research, but august 1, the possibility of earning an m.a. in graphic communications management and technology at NYU.
  • i am going to have my business announcement cards mailed to friend's and family by january 1.
i'm excited to see where these goals take me!
