If you recall, I was commissioned to make a birthday cake. Here were the particulars:
"He's 5. He likes the turtle from Finding Nemo. And Nemo. And anything orange because of Nemo. And he likes cars. Red cars. And planes, put a plane on there. His favorite colors are blue and green. And also he likes soldiers."
So TOY BOX it is, and here is the result...
One layer devil's food, one layer (real!) vanilla bean, strawberry preserves filling, vanilla buttercream frosting.
Inside the toy box: a plastic knight, horse & catapult, a fondant beach ball, a paper baseball & glove, and a little wooden bat.
Outside the toy box: a plastic dragon, fondant teddy bear, paper sailboat, plastic toy soldiers, a fondant racecar with a fondant Squirt (from Finding Nemo), a fondant airplane (with WORKING propeller), and a plastic sticker Nemo. (There WAS a fondant Nemo, but he suffered from over-fixing and was put out of his misery. Luckily I had the sticker as a backup.)
There are cardboard supports in both the plane and car. Squirt has a toothpick supporting his neck.
The more I mold with fondant, the more I'm convinced I should be using gumpaste or marzipan.
I got double the price of the last cake. :D
