Until now, all of my cakes have been gifts, favors, and freebies of one kind or another - but Thursday night I got my first real cake job, in the form of a phone call from my mom's friend Pauline, calling on behalf of her boss... "Can you make a baby shower cake for 30 people for tomorrow evening?" Wow, short notice!
My mission directives were: chocolate & vanilla cake, strawberry filling, vanilla frosting. And make it pink.
I didn't want to mess with tiers, so I went with a 12" round cake that should feed up to 45 people.
Since I had zero time for planning, I ganked the sleeping baby/teddy bear/blanket theme from another cake I saw. The scrolly design on the top was just freehanded.
This was my first time writing with icing (don't know how I've gotten away without doing it before), so that's the part that had me worried the most. Tim had a great idea about writing with a pen on waxed paper, and then poking pinholes on the cake for guidelines, so that's what I did. "Raman" came out a little wobbly since I piped that part upside-down (bad idea), but otherwise I think it came out okay.
I don't think they expected anything so personal with such short notice, so they were VERY happy with the shower cake and ordered a birthday cake on the spot! (Yay for having more notice this time.)
Here's what they said about the birthday cake... "He's 5. He likes the turtle from Finding Nemo. And Nemo. And anything orange because of Nemo. And he likes cars. Red cars. And planes, put a plane on there. His favorite colors are blue and green. And also he likes soldiers."
::blink::
LOL, should be an interesting cake.
Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come. :)
