Sometimes you get exactly what you expect...

So, yeah. I've made some mistakes. Probably more of them than I have had successes. I remember a cpnversation I was having with the Mancub and the Judoka about training. The Judoka was complaining that she wasn't getting this weapon kata down right. You see, she kept stumbling over one count of it and was upset about the mistakes. I decided that I would stop reading the kata to her, have the Mancub read it while I did it with her twice, and then we'd do it to the counts without our cubby narrator.

So, we started and after the two reading, we started to do it without. The first time, Judoka made a couple mistakes. Same as the second. And the third, fourth, fifth...etc. And each time we did the kata. Mancub and Judoka observed that I did the kata perfectly. Well, of course I did, I'd read it to her about 10 or 15 times, so I had it committed to memory, but that is neither here nor there, but an important element to consider. Judoka got frustrated and so I decided that we take a break. When Judoka got down on herself, we had an interesting comversation. As best as I can, I'll transcribe it below:

Judoka: "I keep messing up!"
Me: "Calm down Judoka. These are easy things to correct. You can do it, you're the shizzle!"
Judoka: "That's easy for you to say. You did it perfect and you've never done it before!"
Mancub: (kinda like Flava Flav, whining and with a cold) "Yeah!"
Me: "Okay. But I've been doing this stuff for years. I should do things a little bit better."
Judoka: "What's that got to do with anything?" (Note: Sometimes, when Judoka is displeased with herself and/or frustrated, she gets sarcastic and a tad mouthy. She means no harm, she's just a bit upset and trying to express herself).
Me: "Okay, what you didn't notice: I had at least 4 incorrect hip movements, I shuffled here when I the kata calls for a step, I attacked with a side strike here, when I should have used overhead, my block here was sloppy, I didn't step at a 45-degree angle here..."
Me: "I made tons of mistakes. A different one each time we did it."
Judoka: "It didn't look like it to me..."
FlavaMancub: "Yeah!"
Me: "That's because I make different mistakes than you do, and I expect different things from myself. Whatever. The point is, I'd already made my mistakes and put them behind me. I remember them, try not to do them again, but go on from there. If you focus on the mistakes, you take away from all of the things you do correctly."
Judoka & Mancub: "What?"
Me: "Judoka, you did more things correctly and fixed the things you were doing incorrectly. That's good. Now, move on and stop worrying so much."
Judoka: "I'll try."

Here's my point. I've been judged. Judged on a few mistakes. So, I guess it's okay to see what I was and forget what is actually there. Well, maybe not see what is actually there. Either way, to be blunt. I called you. I cried out for you. And you said nothing at all. Soundgarden said it best. Like I said, Sometimes you get exactly what you expect.

Right now Baby and Judoka are singing that song from "Lilo and Stich." What's it called "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride?" Anyway it's cute. Makes me smile.
