Four

When Gerard looked at Frank he didn’t see the boyish face with sparkling brown eyes and rosy cheeks, he saw a fragile young man with dark, hollow eyes and dark circles beneath them. Whoever this was it wasn’t Frank. At Gerard’s voice Frank’s head shot up and he wrapped his arms tighter around himself, his insecurity elevated faster as he was joined on the bench. His heart rate increased for a brief moment as he threw his arms around the person, a distant but familiar smell infiltrated his brain. Gerard looked up at the nurse standing by the table, fright just barely visible in his green eyes.

“He does it to everyone who calls him ‘Frankie’, we learnt quickly to call him Frank. The doctors seem to think that it’s some weird childhood thing.” She moved to move him off of Gerard but Frank’s scratchy voice stopped her in her tracks.

“No! He found me. I… I knew he’d find me. He had to… I’m his little Frankie.” His arms tightening compulsively around Gerard.

“Well I’ll be.” Gerard thought that she’d fall down from shock but instead she walked off, her white pumps squeaking noisily on the linoleum floor and returned moments later with what Gerard assumed was a doctor in tow. Gerard felt Frank’s arms compulsively tighten again as he, himself struggled to breathe, Frank’s scratchy voice and weak words had twisted the knife just that little bit deeper, Gerard put one hand on the back of Frank’s head gently stroking the hair flat soothing Frank and calming himself. He’d never realised how much he liked having Frank in his arms until this moment, he wanted to commit it to memory, to file it away in a new folder. No “past Frank memories” but “present Frank memories” the folder that he wanted to fill to the brim.

“Hello. Who are you?” The doctor asked him quietly so as not to disturb Frank who was steadily climbing into Gerard’s lap.

“Way. Detective Way.”

The doctor frowned as he looked over the logbook. “Says here Gerard Way.”

Gerard nervously chuckled as he dug his badge and ID from his pocket and showed them to the doctor. “Old habits.”

“Where are you from?”

“Originally from Jersey but ten years ago I moved to Vegas to join the force. I’m one of the highest ranking detectives in the Vegas SVU.” Gerard explained nervously as Frank’s hands ran over his kin. “I don’t see how where I’m from is relevant. I know I don’t have jurisdiction here.”

“That isn’t what concerns me. Frank here has been here for five years almost and he hasn’t spoken since he arrived.” The doctor sat carefully. “Then all of a sudden you show up and he talks. He doesn’t even speak to his mother.”

“We went to boarding school together, he was transferred and we developed a relationship then something happened and he left the day after I turned eighteen. I haven’t seen him since. Don’t presume that I never came looking for him. I spent two years looking, joined the force and continued to look for him. Tell me why he’s here.”

“He was found on the Turnpike, completely mute and seemingly mentally incapacitated. However, he’s perfectly sane and was completely mute up until ten minutes ago.” The doctor smiled. “I’m Doctor Michaels Gabriel Michaels and if you’re from Vegas you must work with that chap with the poofy hair who spent the last year trying to get Frank’s medical records to no avail. No one seemed to be interested in Frank, even the other patients ignored him.”

Gerard nodded. “I hate to be a pain in the ass but I’ve just drove a day and a half to get here and I was wondering if you had somewhere I could crash for a few hours?”

“If your presence here means Frank stays lucid by all means. I’ll have someone find you a bed. Frank let go of the nice Detective.”

“NO!”

Gerard smiled weakly. “It’s okay. Thanks again.” He stiffly managed to move himself so that he was leaning against the wall. Frank wasted no time in climbing back into his lap, his arms wrapped around him and his head nestled under Gerard’s chin. Gerard began rubbing slow and soothing circles on Frank’s bare arm that was around his waist, Frank’s quiet words making soft breaths on his neck. “You found me. You found me.”

“Yeah Frankie we found you.” Gerard isn’t surprised that Frank didn’t notice his slip up and leaned his head back and allowed sleep to take him over properly now that he knew that Frank was safe. He doesn’t remember if he dreamed or not but if he did, it was more than likely about Frank as they always were. He wakes up to a stiff neck and back and familiar calloused hands touching his face gently, he opens his eyes and finds Frank’s once bright brown eyes staring at him, his surroundings are the second thing he notices then he remembers where he is and his eyes slip shut once again. The moment that Frank’s lips touch his, he forgets where he is and who he is and who is around all he does is remember the past, back when it was “Frankie and Gee” but when a cough sounds he freezes. He pulls away and holds Frank’s face away from him.

“Frankie stop.” To both his surprise and the doctors Frank stops and settles himself against Gerard as he looks over at the doctor with a blush.

“We’ve come to a decision. Frank hasn’t step foot out of this building in five years and considering that he obviously likes you, we wanted to know if you would take him out somewhere for a few hours. To get him ready for when we discharge him.” The doctor’s voice is filled with mild humour and pleading. He can just imagine the thoughts going around the doctor’s head but he pushes them away and nods. The doctor scurries off and returns with a pair of shoes, handing them to Frank before Gerard scribbles his phone number down and yanks Frank out the door. The Jersey air hits both of them and they pause to breathe it in.

Before Gerard moves, his back collides with brick and familiar lips cover his lips, he doesn’t hesitate to open his mouth and allow Frank to take control. They both need this as much as they need to breathe the smog filled air around them. Before something happens that shouldn’t happen this quickly Gerard pulls away and rests his forehead on Frank’s, his large hands cupping the sides of Frank’s face.

“God, you’ve no idea how much I missed you.”

Thanks for reading. Comments and criticism are welcome and appreciated. It's short again I know.
