Leave Me Hanging
Gerard is once again up on deck, leaning over the railing looking down at the ocean below for the last time as they dock tomorrow, the spray is freezing and not for the first time since he boarded the ship does he think about jumping. To let the waves crush over him as he stops struggling to breathe. Not for the first time has he contemplated what that would feel like, just to let yourself go but he won’t, he is needed both in Jersey and back home. His peace is disturbed by Bert who stands beside him, his grubby hands straining against the cold metal railing. Gerard acknowledges his presence with a slight nod and goes back to staring out at the sea.
“It’s beautiful isn’t it? Looking at it and listening to it.” Bert speaks and his voice holds none of the flare it had held before. Gerard realises that Bert is just as hollow as he is a moment too late.
“Bert don’t. We are getting off soon. It will be better.”
“I’m going. It was nice knowing you.” Bert embraces Gerard before climbing over the railing and letting go, no final wishes, no last goodbyes. Not even a scream. Gerard doesn’t react until a pair of newly familiar arms wrap around him.
“He’s gone. Just…gone.”
“It’s okay. It will be better.” Frank’s promise is as empty as Gerard’s was.
“When the ship docks. I’m leaving you behind.”
