Dodgeball
Wyatt was red; Chris was blue in a friendly recess game of dodgeball. Chris wanted to be on the red team with Wyatt just like he always wanted. The bright red dogeball flew towards his face and before he knew it he was laying flat on his back looking up at the clear San Francisco sky, his older brother’s smirking face above him.
“Did you just throw that at me?” His pre-pubescent voice high-pitched and cracking.
Wyatt smiled at his younger brother, not replying to his question merely holding a hand out to help him up. Chris took his brother’s outstretched hand trying his best to ignore the complaints from the others. The red leader complained the most, squaring off with Wyatt while Chris hid behind his brother, their hands still clasped together, blocking out the mini argument as he stared at their hands. Blinking out of his thoughts he heard his brothers voice.
“Well, maybe you shouldn’t put him on the other team, you know how protective I am of him.”
Chris understood why Wyatt was so protective of him, it had taken him a while to develop his powers and even now he still had difficulty controlling them when he was under intense emotional stress. Chris could feel his older brother’s hand sweat in his, he tugged at his brother in warning, it would not be good for Wyatt to lose it now.
“Wyatt, don’t. Mom will kill us.” He could just imagine Wyatt scoffing in his head thinking along the lines of: ‘She can’t just blow us up.’ Chris started to giggle quietly behind Wyatt, who joined everyone in looking at him like he was cracking up or something. “Come on Wyatt, let’s go. Please.”
Wyatt unable to say no to his brother’s puppy dog face succumbed and allowed himself to be dragged away and to somewhere far across the playground, his hand still entwined with Chris’. For some reason Wyatt has never been able to say no to Chris, a reason that he hoped he’d figure out soon before it became a major issue.
“Wyatt. Guess what we are?”
“Teammates.” Although he didn’t know that it would be a lot more one day.
