Here's an entry about things I love, hate, love to hate, and hate to love.
Love:
Here I could say, "Ashley," and you all would say, "Oh get a life. Say something else." So, I will. Even though this is my journal and I can say whatever I want.
I love trail riding on my mountain bike. Right now it needs to go to the shop for a tune-up, so I haven't ridden it in a while. But let me tell you...when I'm on my bike riding in the woods, there really isn't any better thing. There's a trail about 1.25 hours away from here that is just awesome. It's in the Hoosier National Forest, so the trees are abundant. It takes forever to get to the "top" of the trail, but riding down is such a rush!
I also love my cats. Tofu is laying with me right now. She's sandwiched between me and a stack of covers. She's purring heavily, and it makes me feel what it probably feels like to purr. It's rumbley.
Hate:
I hate when people can't get over the fact that not everyone is going to say, "Merry Christmas!" Instead, they might say, "Happy Holidays!"
My oldest brother is this way. When someone says happy holidays, he gets pissed off. "It's Merry Christmas." He'll say. Come on. You're being a child about it. It's same dang thing every year. "I guess it's a St. Patrick's Day dinner at work, because it's not a Christmas dinner. They called it a Holiday Dinner, so it could be anything." Shut the hell up. You're stupid. He seriously gets angry about it! I know other people do the same thing. But he's my brother, so I can complain more explicitly about it. (As I'm writing this, I'm hoping no one reading insists that others say "Merry Christmas." So...um...if you do...well, I guess you know how I feel about it now.)
Love to hate
I love to hate bad grammar. Nothing thrills me more at work than to come across an honest-to-goodness grammar mistake. I would say 90% of the time the things I mark as "incorrect" are problems with a client-specific style. We spell breast milk as two words, but it can be spelled as one word. So I'll mark a lot of that stuff. But it's not really that often that I come across copy that says something like "This paper is comprised of..." So I get to mark it out, because it's supposed to be "This paper comprises..." Because "comprise" means "to be made up of," so if you say "is comprised of" you're really saying "is made up of of."
This may be a bad example, because "is comprised of" has been used a lot lately and is becoming acceptable usage. I will stick to my prescriptivist ways and mark it incorrect.
Sometimes I'll find a missing period in the middle of a long paragraph. One sentence will end, and the next will begin with the appropriate capital letter, but there will be no punctuation indicating such a thing. Oh the pleasure I get from drawing a little circle with a dot in it...
Hate to love
I hate to love Long John Silver's. I friggin love that restaurant. Their fish is so damn good, I can't get enough of it. And those little crispies that are left over when you finish everything...I love every greasy little bit of it. I've taken Ashley there once, and she was not impressed. Growing up, my parents warned me about it. They said, "It's disgusting. You should never go there." But when I first went and savored the succulent fish they serve, I was hooked. Haha. Hooked.
This being said, I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Whether you're with family or on your own, please take time to be thankful for everything, even the things you hate, and especially the things you love to hate.
At least you don't work as a Christmas Elf at Macy's.
