I can honestly say, I have no fucking clue what i'm doing right now.
Basically, my life revolves around going to portland, renting movies from Movie Madness, watching movies, returning to portland and repeating the process.
These past couple weeks I've seen some real good ones and some duds.
Oldboy
Crazy ass fucking Korean flick from the director of Sympathy for Mr Vengeance. The film is about a man, who one drunken night gets abducted and imprisoned in an apartment for 15 years. No one tells him why he's been abducted and we see the veil of sanity slowly dissapear as he spends these years completely alone. He spends his time training to his body and watching tele. He's released one day. Crammed inside a suitcase, he awakens, and stumbles onto a rooftop without any explanation. The cell phone that was with him rings while he's getting sashimi and tells him he has five days to figure out why he was imprisoned.
Kick ass flick. Gritty, realisitic. A must see. See it before the american remake comes out, please.
School on Fire
From Ringo Lam, the director of Full Contact(Collin's favorite) and City on Fire. An interesting semi-action fare. Triads in a HK high school clash with each other, teachers and police. A chick is caught in the middle, goes from good student to whoring herself to pay off money to the triads. Kinda depressing, but I doubt Hong Kong's school system is so dangerous. I wouldn't recommend this one to anyone though...
Infernal Affairs
Very nice film. Andy Lau and Tony Leung(the good one) star, so a good looking cast. A movie about an undercover cop infiltrated in a gang, and a triad mole with a middle-level position within the HK police. The two race to figure out who the other is. Sounds like you've seen it before, but I guarantee teh quality here. Great writing, great pace, great acting. Scorsese(my favorite director)is remaking it here. I wish he wouldn't.
Close Your Eyes (Doctor Sleep)
A decent movie from Britain starring my favorite Croation actor- Dr Kovac from ER. Dr. Kovac is a hypnotist with a special gift, he is at least partially telepathic. When treating a police detective, he lets it slip that he has said gift. The detective drags him along to help a little girl who resently lost the ability to speak, due to almost being killed by a psycho. So Dr. Kovac has to help the police find the psycho, 'ere he kills again. There's more there in the movie, just a bit more... but I would end up ruining it for y'all- who aren't gonna see it anyway.
Days of Being Wild
I was told this was movie, directed by Wong Kar Wai, is the HK equivilent of American Graffiti. Not so. The time period is the same as American Graffiti, that's all the similarties. This is a movie about a man who really doesn't treat women very well at all. The main character, played by Leslie Cheung, has never known his real mother, and his weird relationship with his rich step-mother has made him unable to have a "normal" attachment with females. So this flick is about a period in his life, and the chicks and friends he effects through his callous behavior. Very excellent, lovely cinematography as well as soundtrack.
Prison on Fire
The second Ringo Lam film I've rented was a much better affair. Starring Chow Yun Fat, and Tony Leung(the bad one). Tony Leung plays Lo Ya Yiu, an accountant who manslaughtered(?) a punk who assaulted Lo Ya Yiu's father. He is sent up for three years. Yiu is a big mouth, and almost immediatly makes enemies in prison. Chow Yun Fat's character steps in, and tries to teach Lo Ya Yiu the ways of HK prison life. He fails in this task for nearly 3 years, and must narrowly escape death on several occasions for Lo Ya Yiu's big mouth and unchanging mindset.
A good flick from a crazy son-of-a-bitch, who I wish would stop making Van Damm movies.
God of Cookery
Simply hilarious, on par with Shaolin Soccer. Stephen Chow is a God(capitol G), can't wait for Kung Fu Hustle.
My favorite part was probably when the Shaolin Arhats beat up Chow, three separate times! My God, I thought I was gonna die.
Wow, now I actually feel like I've done something today.
What I have to watch now:
Record of Lodoss War (all of it)
Bullet in the Head
In the Mood For Love (Criterion Collection bitches)
Lady Snowblood
I almost rented Battle Royale, but I'm not gonna admit to Movie Madness that I haven't already seen it...
