Stolen Memes, or, The Reflex

Aug 08, 2010 15:21

Look, it's a meme involving a book; did you really expect me to resist?
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

"Magically, Gnosis is the state which most easily allows the will and perception to reach out and touch realities beyond the mind. The contents of gnosis are far less interesting than what can be done with it. It is of course possible for some activity to be occurring at more than one level of consciousness. The robotic level, for example, continues to function during all but the most arresting moments of awareness, and parts of it still operate even in gnosis." Lines 4-7, Page 123, From "Liber Null & Psychonaut: An Introduction To Chaos Magic," by Peter J. Carroll

This is probably my favorite magical compendium. It's different than most in that it is presented as a How-To book rather than a strange collection of esoteric knowledge. In most magical guides, the secrets of the books are meant to be mystically gleaned by some state of altered mind, often times the use of drugs being recommended. Instead, here, we have a simple and straight-forward explanation of, essentially, do-it-yourself magical enlightenment and achieving oneness with the universe through self-improvement.

I'd also like to add that perhaps this post was a trifle more revealing that I might desire. However, I did not sleep last night and my judgment is poor because of it. I don't have the care to edit it for content. Beyond that, I have a feeling the only person that will read this is Carnilia, if she even does. If anyone else reads it, I suppose it is of little consequence. I am going to stop mindlessly rambling now. Good bye!
