I woke up forcefully. I had sleep pulled out from under me. This is not a bad thing by any stretch.

Austin Kleon's blackout poems are genius. I wonder what the man could do with cereal boxes.

I saw The Counterfeiters and Iron Man. Both good. Different reasons, as you might suspect. You might already be familiar with the premise of Iron Man, but The Counterfeiters has actually been better-reviewed(!) and tells about a fascinating aspect of the Holocaust: The recruitment of Jewish printers and, yes, counterfeiters, for a German plot to cause panic by dropping fabricated money into London. A scheme suited to cinema but based in reality, a terrific morality play, and a flawless film so far as craft is concerned.

I am unabashedly looking forward to all the right movies (The Dark Knight, The Incredible Hulk, Watchmen) and even a few of the wrong ones (Tropic Thunder, Get Smart, Pineapple Express). I am desperate, as always, for distraction.

In looking for new music to enjoy, if I can enjoy anything, I find myself snagged on nostalgia. I've regressed from The Walkmen's "We've Been Had" (7th grade) to Smash Mouth (5th grade) to Marcy Playground and Fastball (both on the first NOW compilation, which came with my CD player).
"the angry, the empty, the lonely, the
tricked.

we are all
museums of fear."
-Charles Bukowski, "Poem For Nobody"
