Pure Imagination
I'm watching Willy Wonka :D and it's moved me to write. I'm talking the REAL Willy Wonka, not the new one with Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore (thought that one is good in its own special way). You gotta love Gene Wilder and Peter Ostrum (where did he go, by the way?). Though I never realized it before, this is my absolute favorite movie of all time. Sure it's old, sure there are some inconsistencies and flubs, but it's a cinematic piece of art.
I love how, even though we have no idea what the candy tastes like, every single time someone pulls out just the wrapper of any of the Wonka candy, I immediately think, "That looks SO good." Like the Scrumdidlyumptious bar in the beginning with the little kid with the black hair. I would give my right arm to have one of those...just the way the wrapper looks...and the sound it makes when Charlie bites into it once he buys one. And of course, once they get into the factory, everything is a tasty explosion!! Someone was a real genius when they put this thing together.
The comedy is good-natured and wholesome, something that never happens in movies now. And when I was younger, i even missed most of the jokes, but when you really think about it, it's HILARIOUS! I mean, the guy with the computer that's supposed to find the location of the golden ticket is and it tells him that it wouldn't because that would be cheating. Where IS that guy?? He's hilarious!! And the news reporter. And the teacher....all great characters.
And the music!! It's like a candy store of sounds and words. So maybe now everything is all computerized and lyrics are made to be clever....call me crazy, but I LOVE this good old-fashioned music with the heavy strings and the corny lyrics. "Candy Man" and "Pure Imagination" are my absolute favorites. The candy store man is my absolute favorite character behind Willy Wonka. That song makes me believe that dreams are possible :P. "Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew...cover it in chocolate and a miracle or two..."
I find the strangest things about the movie that are so exciting! The costumes are perfect. Even the little mints that Veruca's dad gives to Veruca's mom intrigue me. And speaking of Veruca....
I know that Roald Dahl was the one who came up with the characters, but this cast is the definitive version of each one. Violet is spot on! Veruca is the best spoiled brat I've ever seen. Mike TV is humorously jaded. Augustus is the perfect fat boy. And Charlie, of course is the sweetest, humblest, most adorable little boy (though Freddie Highmore is cute). The grandparents, the mother, the candy store man, and OF COURSE Willy Wonka! This casting director should be praised as a genius.
So, in short, Willy Wonka is the best movie ever. I'll leave you with a little something...
