So after hearing back from the BrGr folks that they are now hand forming their angus patties, and receiving a coupon from them (which I somehow, magically lost while in the restaurant) we went back to try out the new patties. I ordered, for directness of comparison, the "Average Joe." Again, to my dismay, we got the 'pink or not-pink' spiel. Again, I ordered pink. Again, it came out gray. Due to circumstances beyond BrGr's control, I was so hungry I could barely speak, so I just ate it instead of sending it back. While the patty was clearly not out of a press, and while it was definitely very juicy, it still tasted bland. I tried a bite of Heather's "Shroomz" burger. It had some extra flavor, but it was obvious that was owing to the mushrooms and brie on it, and not due to some fundamental difference in the patty. (She also ordered pink and got gray; I shudder to think what happens when one orders not-pink.) We split a milkshake for dessert, which was more milk and less shake than the ones on my two previous visits.
Oh well. I guess the lesson, for me anyway, is "don't order an Angus burger." I suspect this place will continue to be a work-lunch destination, so I'm sure I'll go back, but I'll be sticking with the more exotic options. It's a shame - a 'plain' burger can be a flavorful thing of beauty when done right. The hand formed patties were a step in the right direction, but the special blend of ground beef and/or how it's being cooked are not delivering on the flavor experience.
