The real reason Arthur had lost to Morgause actually was because she was a woman. He knew Merlin didn't believe him, and Morgause was awfully handy with a sword, there was no discounting that. In fact, that was the trouble. The image of her standing there, deftly wielding that sword… Arthur had never been so aroused by anything in his life.

He had thought a great deal about the challenge she had offered him, in the days in-between her sparing his life and his escape to go seek her out. His imagination came up with everything from fighting dragons by her side to her tying him up and torturing him until he might as well be dead.

Some of his daydreams--well, most of them, to be honest--were sexual. He really, really hoped what she had planned for him was sexual. So when Merlin was going on and on about how he hadn't thought this through, he wasn't sure whether he could tell him, in all honesty, that he had.

When he did arrive and she asked him to put his head on the block he knew he must do it. He couldn't chance looking weak in front of her, and this uncertainty as to his fate was kind of getting him off. She surprised him with her leniency, and when she asked him for his wish he realised that he must suppress the immediacy of his wanting her in order to gain information, which he knows will be more valuable in the long-run. After all, he could always seduce her later. There was truly no point in wasting a wish on it and making her believe that he was only able to win his women through trickery.

It was almost worth it though, foregoing his baser desires to see her give him such an appraising look; as though she almost admired him. He loves that she misjudged him.

When she showed him his mother, brought her to him, he knew that he loved Morgause for bringing this miracle to pass. Almost as swiftly, however, his thoughts of love turned to something else entirely: revenge.
