"Get me out of here" she said to her father.
Her head was spinning, she felt faint.
"What am I doing here." she thought. She always
knew that she and Craig were a great couple. Everyone said so. But was this
what it is really all about? Is this the stuff that fairy tales are made out
of? She thought “all I have is a guy to eat dinner with and go to the movies
with. It is like lonely insurance.
When they first met we were like soul mates. Then we drifted
farther and farther apart until he seemed like a hitchhiker that she had picked
up along the road of life.
This was a scary feeling. Very scary. This is not at all
what she was looking for.
She wanted a life of adventure. She wanted an adventurous
partner. But the life that lay up the aisle in front of her looked oh so boring.
In truth she couldn't imagine the anything worse.
She thought " this wouldn't be living this is just
surviving." All of the feelings that were wallowing deep inside of her
started to well up and spill over the sides. She started to cry and murmured
again "Get me out of here."
But of course her father wasn't paying attention. He was
listening to the music waiting for their cue.
"There, there dear don't cry. You’ll smudge your makeup."
He didn't understand. Right now makeup was the last thing on
her mind. She started to look around for a doorway or an open window or anything.
"No, Daddy you don't understand, I don't want to be
here."
Then he understood. These weren't tears of joy these were
tears of regret. The tears flowed out her eyes and down her cheeks.
"oh no no no. Honey, honey, honey, what’s the matter
dear?" It was funny he would ask this because he knew exactly what was the
matter was.
"Oh Daddy, I'm not in love anymore."
When he heard this he knew he couldn't do anything to calm
her. He let go of her hand and sighed.
"I knew this day would come. I just didn't know it
would come this soon."
She stopped crying and looked at him. "What do you
mean?"
"Well, honey. The heart doesn't work that way. You see,
everyone you love, everyone that you really love" He stopped and smiled at
her. "You never let go of that person" he continued.
"How do you know for sure?" she asked.
"Well" he said, "remember your first crush? The one in forth grade?"
Then for the first time that day, she smiled. "Yes" she said "Jeremy Charleston. He was so cute." Then she giggled and said "did you know that he picked a rose for me but he made sure and take
off all the thorns so that I wouldn't get pricked?"
"Yeah" he said "That was really sweet of him"
There was a moment of silence while the two of them basked in
the beauty of this memory.
"Do you see my point? That rose was a decade and a half
ago but you still smile when I mention that kid."
She just sat there, she wasn't crying anymore. She wasn't
smiling either. She just sat there staring off into space. Then after a long
pause she sighed.
"But how do I know marriage is the answer?" she
asked. Her face still full of tears.
To this question he gave a chuckle to himself.
"Honey, I know that marriage is not a bed of roses but,
you know what?
"What?"
"It is so worth it."
Then the music stopped and it was their cue to walk down the
aisle.
He smiled at her, stood up, offered her his arm and said "shall
we?" And so guiding his daughter by the arm he walked down the aisle to
give away his most precious possession.
