That was a blackbird outside her window. It must be. It was black and small and even in the dark it avoided the thick glass window of the train Sumian was riding in. But … something crossed her mind. It was bright light inside the train. Perhaps that was why the blackbird didn't hit it.
Sumian sighed, resting her chin on the heel of her hand, and resuming the daydream that was interrupted by the passing blackbird. There really was nothing she could see out of the window save the murkiness of the night. She didn't expect to see anything anyway nor did she regret the fact that every day she had to go through it all, going home after day had slipped into night. The ride from her campus in Bukit Timah to her parents' apartment in Jurong was not too far, and she could write songs - though only in her head - during her journey. Hmm. A song about a blackbird might not be too bad for her next assignment.
Blackbird, blackbird
It's so dark outside
It's so bright inside
Ain't you want to be here
Such a silly song; Sumian giggled inwardly, wondering how she'd managed to join the applied art department and not few of her lecturers loved her work, too. She tilted her head back, smoothing her silky shoulder-length hair back, realizing belatedly that the smile she had flashed to the window was responded to by a boy sitting on the row across from hers. Sumian turned around and the boy waved from his seat. Her brow creased slightly as she studied him. He was not bad, with his layered, shoulder-length hair, wide eyes, and thick, black eyebrows. Blackbird, thought Sumian as a smile broke again on her face, before she was aware of what she was doing. Blushing, Sumian turned back to face the window and shook her head a bit, embarrassed. She did not dare look back until a voice announced that the train had reached Jurong.
~
Blackbird, blackbird
Where are you?
Once you were here
Next you fly away
Sumian swept a glance across the rows of seats and breathed deeply. The blackbird was not here tonight. Sumian sank into a seat - the same seat every time - and wondered if he had been here in the same car with her the previous nights. But it was no matter now. The fact was the boy was not around this time and suddenly Sumian felt lonely despite the other passengers in the car with her. She tried looking out the window, shuffling into her sling bag for her iPod and scrolling up and down searching for her favorite music - or anything. Nothing worked. She thrust the gadget back into her bag and went back looking into the thick night. Thanks to the blackbird, Sumian muttered in annoyance. What's wrong with me?
"What made you smile?"
"Huh?" Sumian felt as if her heart had leaped into her throat, looking up.
Her blackbird. It was the boy. His hair fell to cover one side of his face and Sumian thought she had never seen someone as handsome as he was.
"I mean the other night. You smiled at the window but I'm not sure that was the reason why you did that."
Sumian opened her mouth, intending to explain, but she smiled widely instead. There would be time when she would tell him all about the blackbird - how it had inspired her to write a song, and how it had made them aware of each other. Right now Sumian just wanted to savor the happy feeling of seeing the boy again, and perhaps asked him later if he also felt the same.
