“I’ll wait for you outside, okay?”
“Sure.” Casey steps into the bar’s restroom that is probably the cleanest bar restroom Casey has ever seen.
The place is empty and Casey chooses the nearest stall to the door. After a minute, he realizes he’s hearing water pouring hard. At first he thinks it’s raining, but the noise doesn’t seem to be coming from outside the building. No, it’s from inside the restroom.
So probably another guest, Casey thinks. He finishes his business, flushes the toilet, and zips up his pants, trying to ignore his own nagging thought that he didn’t hear anyone enter the restroom. But he’s still a bit paranoid after Mary Beth. No one came in so the water’s probably…
running from each and every tap, all three of them, and the sinks’ drains are closed so the water fills up the sinks so fast it is starting to splash over the brim.
“Shit!”
Casey runs and immediately pulls each of the drainage plugs before turning off the faucets.
“Damnit. Who’s left these on?” he mutters. The bar would’ve been flooded and he’s sure people would’ve panicked and there would’ve been chaos.
But who? Watching the water drain slowly, Casey swears to himself he is sure now he didn’t hear anyone come into the restroom after him. Suddenly he has goose bumps on his neck and maybe he imagines it but the little room suddenly turns freezing cold and fog comes out of his mouth when he breathes.
No, he isn’t imagining it. It’s real and Casey backs off slowly when the large mirror above the sinks begins to get clouded.
“What the fuck?” He keeps retreating until his back hits the door. Casey wheels around and grabs the doorknob. But like in some low-budget horror movie, the door is jammed. He can’t open it.
Casey pulls and shakes the door in panic, crying out for help from anybody who can hear him. But nobody is coming and Casey suddenly feels more than sees some entity now closing in on him, starting out from his ankles and crawling up his thighs, crotch, hips and it begins to coil around his neck.
“Help!” he chokes out. His hands are still free and he yanks at the door as hard as he can. His eyes begin to sting with tears. He’s not going to die here tonight, and alone. “Help. Anybody. Zeke…”
The thing tightens each second and Casey feels his energy drain out. He begins to lose consciousness and he knows he can’t fight anymore.
“Casey!” The door slams open. Casey thinks he sees Zeke but it might be the result of his own fragmented imagination. He reaches out weakly.
“Zeke… I guess I - we. I’m sorry, Zeke.” He feels himself being lifted off his feet, held fast and carried swiftly out of the restroom.
After that, everything goes dark and he doesn’t remember anymore.

When Casey opens his eyes, it’s to Zeke’s warm brown eyes that look so sad it almost scares him.
“What happened?” Casey struggles to sit up but the sudden movement makes his head throb. He winces and falls back to the bed. Zeke hurries to his side.
“Casey, don’t move just yet. How’re you feeling?”
Casey swallows the bile that threatens to come up to his mouth.
“I’m okay,” he says weakly. “But what was going on?” He forgets everything when Zeke reaches out and touches his face, and he leans into it. It feels warm and safe. Casey wouldn’t mind staying like that forever.
“I didn’t know,” Zeke says. “I didn’t know the place is haunted and that the spirit always waits for someone who comes in alone and the restroom is empty.”
“Haunted?” Casey means to scoff, but what comes out is a strangled whisper.
“Yeah.” Zeke rubs both of Casey’s arms. “I’m sorry.”
“Hey, it’s not your fault. You couldn’t have known that.”
As if not listening to Casey at all, Zeke goes on, “I was so scared. I almost lost you.” He shivers visibly.
Casey takes Zeke’s hand and wraps it with both of his own.
“But here I am, safe and sound. And it’s all because of you. You came right on time to save me.”
Zeke’s eyes clear up and he nods. He smiles slightly.
“I guess I’m a hero then.”
Casey yelps when Zeke suddenly squeezes him tightly. He half sobs into Zeke’s shoulder and breathes in his boyfriend’s scent that he loves so much, before pulling back.
“Didn’t you know? You’ve always been my hero.”
