Esmeralda Took found Frodo still standing by the door amidst the screech and cheers of little Halflings running out the house toward the carts and ponies waiting to take them to the Buckland’s Annual Bazaar held by the Brandywine River.
“Frodo, why not join them? You’ll be left behind.”
Frodo did not respond, only looking out a bit too forlornly for Esme’s eyes. She touched his shoulder and realized just then that Frodo was still only clad in his tunic. “Why aren’t you ready to go, lad? Where’s your weskit?”
After some time Frodo shook his head slowly and made to go inside. Esme held him in place.
“Wait. You speak to your Aunt Esme, all right? What’s the matter?”
Frodo twisted off her hands and ran into his bedroom. Being stunned for a fleeting second, Esme caught up with the boy before he got to lock himself in.
“Is something wrong with your clothes, Frodo? Let me see.” But she already looked around and spotted the lad’s weskit draped over the back of an armchair near the hearth. She reached out for it and began to examine the piece, finding a discernible tear along the seam at the back. “Oh, Frodo, why did you not tell me about this?” She smiled and smoothed Frodo’s hair, well-nigh taking a deep breath when Frodo smiled back albeit very faintly. She took his hand and they went to her sewing room.
“Let’s patch it up for now, all right, Frodo? But you must remind me to get you a new one soon. This might already be too tight for you.”
She needed no more than ten minutes to mend the clothes but all the carts had been off when Esme and Frodo went out of the house. Frodo should not fret about it, though, for Aunt Esme gladly had him with her on her pony.
