Spoilers ahoy
So, am I the only one distinctly underwhelmed?
I'm not going to love something purely because it's Joss or because it's Marvel.
I wasn't expecting genius right off the bat, either. It's a pilot. Pilots are distinctly difficult to craft and it will be much fairer to give it a few more episodes to see what the show is really going to be like. The first seasons of both Buffy and Angel had their problems, as did their pilots. But I was still engaged by them.
I was underwhelmed by SHIELD.
I was immediately stuck by the fact that, apart from Melinda May, Ron Glass' scientist guy and Mike Peterson, there were no significant poc's. It is a very white cast. It's one of the many reasons I hope Mike Peterson will actually be back. Not least because I felt he was at least developed as a character. Something that didn't happen to many of the other characters.
I really felt as though Coulson was very un-Coulson like. He was far too 'aw, shucks' for me. Gone was the guy who kept everything very internal and had awesomely dry one-liners. Unless the point is that whatever brought Coulson has changed his personality...
I'm not sure about Skye but she was at least fairly interesting.
Unlike square-jaw guy who is so generic it hurts. I wasn't enthused by what I saw from the trailers but I was hoping that seeing the show would change my mind, but, nope. So generic I don't understand why he's there. So boring. And with Coulson's line about 'and with your family' he's going to be related to a senator/something similar or have family in the business. I would be quite happy to never discover his backstory.
Unlike Melinda May. If she was the main character, I'd be sold on this show. Actually, if she and J August Richards were the main characters, I'd be in love with this show already. I want to know what happened to her. And my favourite scene, was, hands down, her taking out the bad guy. That was an awesome move. I want to know all the things about her.
I'm kind of fed up with quirky scientists. Everyone has quirky scientists. They better get interesting quick, is all I'm saying. Plus, if they come up with a solution every week I'll be calling bullshit really fast.
I did love Maria Hill, though. I want more of her and Melinda May.
I felt as though the plotting was very stilted and clumsy. Maybe a case of too many cooks in the kitchen? Because you have Joss, Jed and Maurissa. I know they work well together and I loved what Jed and Maurissa did on Spartacus. But then there's going to be various people from Marvel. And, ideally, ABC isn't the network I'd want this show on.
Also, I think this was the most pedestrian directing I've seen from Joss in, well, either a really long time or ever.
I really hope gets better and it's just a distinctly average pilot.
I'll give it probably another 6 or 7 episodes because I like the creative team and I like some of the actors, but, that was so not the pilot I'd hoped it would be.
