So, I got up super early today so I could download the episode and watch it before going into work. For the first time this season I didn't want to be spoiled and I knew I'd never get through the day without searching out spoilers.
I'm fairly certain that my thoughts aren't going to reflect the majority of the fandoms. And I'm okay with that.
Okay, so I'm going to start with what I liked/loved
1) Stiles. I mean (apart from one small thing that I'm get to later) I LOVED him and his dad. The scenes between Dylan O'Brien and Linden Ashby were amazing and totally my favourite. They gave me so many feels. Just, the Sheriff's reaction when Stiles is missing and his horror and his terror for his son and his reaction when he walks into the room is just perfect. Seriously perfect. I was a mess of emotions and feelings. And the pep talk he gave Stiles was so heart-wrenching and just what Stiles needed. And, god. But the sheriff better get in on the secret next season. He needs to know.
2) Peter. In many ways, I still hate Peter for what he did last season but having his snarky self back was awesome. And finally we have someone who knows what they're doing about the place. I'm not saying I trust him (duh) but god, I want to because having him in the pack is exactly what Derek needs. The lines about it being a laptop and the evolved Kanima were awesome and his summary of what had happened since he'd been gone was the most perfect thing ever. And his reactions to the fight in the warehouse were hilarious. I really hope he's lost some of the crazy, because I want him around for a long time. Plus, he came back to do...nothing? But help Derek? Riiiiight. Not buying it even a little bit.
3) Isaac. OMG, Isaac. He was. Wow. My feelings. He went to Scott for advice and I loved that. And then he came back and he helped. His reaction to finding out who Peter was was amazing. I love his sense of humour. And I really loved the moment where Derek put his hand on Isaac's shoulder. That gave me Pack feels.
4) Chris. Chris keeping to his morals was the best and I'm so happy that he did that. I just loved everything about him.
5) Melissa was freaking awesome. I'm totally in love. And the fact that Melissa had to zip up the bag instead of either of the werewolves there was hilarious.
...and then there was everything else.
It wasn't bad per say, but I wasn't wowed.
a) I was really hoping for something kind of awesome with Gerard and I'd already dismissed the whole wanting a cure for a incurable disease because it was SO obvious and has been done so often before. There wasn't even a cool twist to it.
b) And, really? Wasn't that a terribly elaborate plan to get bitten by an Alpha? I get the impression that despite dying, Gerard had a while to live - you can't heft a broad sword or bet the shit out of a 16 year old or, you know, walk, if you're days from dying of cancer - so why not, I dunno encourage Allison to stay with Scott? become friends with him? get introduced to Derek? make your peace with him and then get him to bite you? It would surely be easier and more likely to work than trying to manipulate everyone into doing exactly what you want them to, exactly when you want them to?
bb) Not to mention, how dumb is it to make all family into extreme monster killers and then turn yourself into a monster?
(everything in point b and bb was pointed out by
suchsights")
c) Scott being, well, clever was unexpected. I'll give them that. Did he tell Stiles about everything off-screen? Or maybe he told the vet instead? Because that didn't seem like a Scott McCall plan. Because, you know, there was a plan (Sorry, Scott. I love you, but).
d) Okay, colour me curious about the vet and guidance counsellor. I'm kind of thinking Watchers council with a side of witches coven? And is she merely a close colleague? sister? Ex-girlfriend?
e) I really felt like they dropped the ball in regard to Allison's mom. I just...didn't care. They never made me like her, they never made me care. If Chris had been killed, I'd have really felt for Allison, I'd have been gutted for Chris, it would have meant something. But with Victoria? I never - until that episode - saw anything maternal from her. Ever. So when she died I was so very meh about it, it wasn't even funny. They just didn't develop her enough for me to care - all it needed was a few scenes like the Stilinski's have for me to give a damn. It wouldn't have taken much, and I would have cared. As it was, it felt pretty empty and I was just waiting for her to die so the shit could hit the fan.
I feel that part of the problem was that last season they had Kate around, and they had to show us the relationship between her and Allison and so Allison's relationship with her mom took a back seat and then in season two they never really focused on it.
Things I want to know
- I get the impression that Gerard beat Stiles up, scared the crap out of him and let him go. But. You know. Why? Was he scared of Stiles' intellect? Why not keep him locked up for the whole thing? Why just let him go? What if Scott had gone to Scott or Derek and told them where Erica and Boyd were? That was kind of risky. Plus, Stiles just leaving them there seemed...wrong/weird/something. That whole thing was just...strange.
- So, are we going to get an explanation as to how the hunters can shoot up the police station and no-one seems all that bothered by it? I mean, at least five deputy sheriff's that we know of were murdered and they were killed by what would look like a knife, not gun fire. And even if Jackson stashed the bodies somewhere, that would still mean there were five police officers missing. Probably presumed dead. And even if it was Matt - he killed everyone inside AND also shot the place up from the outside? How many clones does this boy have? And then he went and drowned himself? Because the post mortem would show that he was held down. I mean, it's totally plausible that they've got people in the state police (I mean, we saw that in season 1), FBI etc etc but some confirmation would be nice.
- Jackson having blue eyes can't mean he's a Hale, can it? (it's a theory I'm seeing a lot on Tumblr) Because making that kind of determination surely suggests that eye colour is family dependent. And I mean, there are only so many colours on the spectrum. Plus, that would mean Isaac, Boyd, Scott and Erica are all related. I'm thinking type of beta would make more sense.
- A pack of Alphas. Does this mean there's an alpha Alpha? That would be hilarious. Also, I want to know more about how packs work.
- Are we assuming that Stiles filled Lydia in on everything she didn't know as they drove to the warehouse? because she was very calm about the whole kanima and werewolf thing, otherwise.
- How did Allison go from being handy with a crossbow and knowing gymnastics to being combat ready? Like, seriously? She could fight with knives. You don't learn that overnight. And this was a very short period of time. It's not like her dad or whoever hand spent six months drilling knife-fighting into her. To be able to knife fight with a werewolf you have to be pretty hardcore and nothing I saw for a season and a half suggested to me that Allison would be able to handle herself like that. I mean, she's not Buffy and even the Slayer with super-strength had to train all the fucking time
- Are we going to get reactions from Stiles, Chris, Allison and Lydia about Peter being there and walking about? Particularly with Stiles and Lydia. He messed with both of them a fair bit. I'd expect both of them to feel more than a little confused and pissed that he's back. That should most definitely get a mention in season 3, don't you think?
- So Derek really did bite Mama Argent? because I re-watched that scene about a 1000 times, and a) there just wasn't time for Derek to bite her that extensively or deep and b) Derek never wolfs out. We never see fangs. And I assume you kind of need them to bite someone. Until someone like, say, DEREK admits it, I'm not believing it. Because that was a poorly staged and shot fight if I'm supposed to believe that.
- are we going to get an explanation as to why Laura could turn into a wolf, Peter turned into a monster wolf thing and Derek...doesn't? (apart from budget, obviously) Because that's been bugging me for 2 seasons now. I'm really hoping that with the pack of Alphas in town we get those answers.
- Am I the only one who thought the mark of the pack of Alphas looked rather...swastika-like?
- So, I'm thinking that what happens to Boyd and Erica at the hands of the pack of alphas will be rather important to the rest of the season (well, yeah, duh). Like, will they be killed, one killed, held hostage, really beaten up, sent back to Derek with a message.
The two things I really want to happen in the 3rd season are Allison and Jackson having ramifications and consequences to what they did in season 2. Particularly Allison.
I mean, Jackson had no control, but as he remembers (by the fact that he told Lydia she didn't want him at her party and telling Danny to run if he started to move towards him, he was beginning to know things even if they weren't specifics) that's not to fuck you up. I'm really hoping that being with Lydia and being part of a Pack will help him become a real boy because that could be an awesome storyline.
And then Allison. God, where to start with Allison? Because unless she does some pretty amazing atonement in season three, I can never like her again. Because, shit, she hunted teenagers who had done nothing. It's one thing to hunt Derek, it's another to decide that you are going to hunt his pack who have done nothing. She tricked them into leaving Derek and then shot them full of arrows. she looked like she was one arrow from killing Boyd. If her dad hadn't been there, she would be a murderer. And then she was okay with her grandpa stringing them up and electrocuting them. And then she shot Isaac with arrows and stabbed him. She said sorry to Scott, but Scott isn't the person she should be apologising to. Isaac, Boyd and Erica are (assuming Boyd and Erica survive meeting the pack of Alphas).
In my view, she became as bad, if not worse than Kate. Because Kate was terrible, but one assumes she spent a lot of time with Gerard for him to warp her. Allison spent about four days with him overall. That's...pretty extreme.
You can't just say sorry and it's all okay. I really hope that the writers know that and address it. I have more hope of the writers following through on the Jackson thing than the Allison thing, to be honest with you, though.
This was way less climatical than I was expecting.
