So, I had a lovely Saturday doing not much of anything, really. I just caught up on some TV. And read a book.
Today I'm having a similar day. I'm reading a book, writing some Steve/Danny fic and watching Blue Planet. Well, really it's supposed to be my background noise, but really, this is way too interesting and David A
I really rather like days like this *g*
So, I thought I'd do some reviews as well.
Books
Each book in this series has made me like it more, but this is the book where it all really clicked for me.
I love all of the rich secondary characters. Billy and his entire family are awesome and I always wish there was more of Jo spending time with Billy's kid's because it's always adorable. And Gary is just amazing. I love how he keeps on riling up Morrison on purpose. So funny.
I totally cheered when Coyote turned up. It had always been obvious that he wasn't going to be dead. I liked how, after wishing that Coyote was there to help her and advise her, Jo (despite all her stops and starts over the last four books) had already got her shit together and realised that Coyote wasn't a warrior like her. That was kind of awesome.
Of course, a part of the book I loved was the inclusion of the two fake FBI agents who travelled in a 1967 Impala with Kansas plates. Totally, totally awesome.
And I liked how knowing that there were others out there, fighting the supernatural, made Jo feel so much better.
I really can't wait for the next book.
I really enjoyed this book. After the first third, there is a wonderful twist that made me absolutely plow through it very quickly.
I particularly liked the various tips at the end of many of the chapters. Such as 'how to spot a fake diamond', 'how to tell if someone is eavesdropping on your conversation', 'How tp Plan an Escape Route', 'How to be a Master of Disguise', to name put a few.
The giant rats that ate people were fucking creepy.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book because they've got to find the Princess and her mom.
This was the second book in a series and first thing on Monday I'm going to be ordering it because this book rocked and I want to see how it all began. Which, naturally, I should have done before reading this one, but, you know, never mind.
Nate is an awesome character but Daisy is utterly fabulous, as is Tatty.
I love the issues that are addressed in this book - the worth of women, science v religion - to name but two.
It contains observations such as this:-
It's simply a matter of evolution. You are the weaker sex; you are dominated by your emotions. That is why the world is ruled by men. If our two sexes were gathered into separate groups, divided by an ocean of water, it would be the men who would set about building ships to cross that divide. You can be sure the women would just dress up, make themselves pretty and wait for the menfolk to arrive.'
'Perhaps you're right,' Daisy sniffed. 'But if the women were to just wait, sitting around amusing themselves, safe in the knowledge that the men would make every effort to reach them...who would you really think was ruling the world?'
This, though, is totally my favourite:-
And if it was the case that God was dissatisfied with any of the results of His own Creation, then Berto could not help feeling it was churlish of Him not to take some responsibility for His mistakes. Either He was all-powerful or He wasn't; He couldn't have it both ways. To create someone as a barbarian and then dislike because they were a barbarian seemed at the very least unfair, if not downright petty. One shouldn't go about painting a picture and then blame the picture for being rubbish.
When Berto was killed I totally cried and loved Nate just a bit more for making sure that Tatty didn't see her brother like that. And then when he was just like a lost boy who had lost his older brother and Clancy just hugged him. OMG - so crying.
I was really hoping that the bad guy wasn't Gerald, but no such luck.
I totally have money on Daisy and Tatty being able to keep Elizabeth in check until Nate gets back.
Ten books to go, and I've managed one a week. Not exactly my best, but certainly better than I thought I was going to do this year. It's all this damn fanfic I'm reading *g*
Film
Unstoppable - It's nothing revolutionary, but it is a fun film. Well shot and Chris Pine, is, well, Chris Pine. Denzel Washington was pretty rocking as well *g*
TV
Can I just say that Will does not have good luck with his best friends. First that judge in season one, and now Wade in season two. Both of them who he plays basketball with. Poor guy.
Oh, Zac. It was always so obvious that Zac and Becca's messing about was going to rebound rather spectacularly. And that it probably wasn't going to be on them.
And when Zac called Glen Childs Junior a jerk? I really wanted to point out that at that moment, Zac was definitely the jerk.
But the look on Zac's face when he realised that his pissing about had rebounded on Grace? I'm so impressed with him immediately saying that he had to call his dad.
There is a part of me that really, really hopes that either Eli or Alicia give Becca a BIG smackdown. Her reappearance was only going to spell trouble.
I mean, if you can get Eli to think that you've gone too far..? Then you've lost sight of the line that you crossed a long time ago.
I think my favourite part of the wiretaps was Alicia finding out that Eli is kind of scared of her and runs a lot of the campaign past her. Brilliant.
Alicia has finally found out that Will left another voicemail. Part of me is interested in what will happen, although, it does look like Will having found another girlfriend after giving up on Alicia, will be the next spanner in the works.
But who will Alicia think deleted the voicemail? Eli? Peter?
The love triangle is, to me, the least interesting part of the show.
I really don't want Alicia to have any kind of affair with Will because I like her and I don't want to lose any respect for her. I really hate adultery and don't want to have to not like Alicia as much.
And what about Blake and Kalinda?
He totally set her up. And, wow, thank god for Carey. Without him, Kalinda would be screwed. I really want to know where that's going to go.
Can't wait for the next episode.
Only a couple of observations:-
1) I'm glad they finally had Sarah tell Chuck that she loved him with or without the Intersect.
2) Casey is an awesome friend. I love how he has to say it with actions and a lack of violence, as opposed to actual talking
3) Sarah kicking ass was FUCKING AWESOME
4) Devon giving free exams so Lester and, well, everyone from the Buy More, could fix the laptop was hilarious. And disturbing.
