As much as a I have been spending time slagging off my synagogue lately, we do have one thing I'm really proud of: we have a kick-ass library, and as of about a year ago we have a kick-ass librarian. He keeps a
really great blog that is updated with truly obsessive frequency. I would like to direct your attention to
this post listing all the books on the subject of Chanukah in our library. If you're looking for a good book for the Jew or Jew-curious person in your life, it's a great resource. I've been in discussion with him about doing some sort of Jewish-related podcast - he's very techy and I'm very talky, so it seems like a match made in heaven.
OOOH IT'S HERE! My new MacBookPro and all the fixin's just arrived at my door, FedEx. Woot!!
In the same shipment was My Family and Other Animals for The Girl, as recommended by
elanorkat. I got it used from Amazon, but it looks absolutely new. On the back cover it says, "A lot of frolic, fun, and charming ribaldry." Charming ribaldry! How I miss that in my life!
Here is a
fun display illustrating Obama's cabinet picks. Man, maybe I've been down so long that it all looks like up to me, but it sure looks like a stellar team. But, as I used to say when I was a hiring manager, "You never love an employee better than the day before he or she starts."
Hey, any of you clever librarians out there know how I can find out which California county had the highest voter turnout in the November election? I think Sonoma County may have been in the top three, and I want my bragging rights. I've tried various angles on Google searches, but haven't been able to get a nice, clean list of all 58 counties, ranked.
Speaking of politics, I'm trying to be mature about the shoe-throwing incident. I mean, on the highest level, it's like "Hey! You don't throw things at my President!" even if he is a feckless buffoon. On the other hand, it's also like, "I wish you had used stilettos." Meh. Sometimes it's just hard to take the high road.
Thanks to everyone who has sent me a holiday card! I am in awe of your organizational skills. I have received lovely cards from
rebeccama (complete with a photo of blue flowers from
Filoli); Curious George (of course) from
alchehmilla, and a very English card from
alysscarlet. Thank you all!
