Rewatching Mulan the other day got me drawing fanart of her badassery at the end. And for me being rusty these last couple months with digital drawing, it turned out alright! Just wish I had the tools/skill to draw thin, delicate lines digitally, already.
The finished version that was assaulted by over-texturing:
That text that you can barely read because LJ image resizing sucks, is from the English translation of the original Mulan poem: "She goes ten thousand miles on the business of war."
And the non-textured version, because it practically got lost in the layering:

This is why I'm so excited for Pixar's upcoming Brave; I'm hoping the Scottish warrior princess lead character will be as badass as Mulan.
I also am jumping back into the fray of webcomic development; at the moment, my focus is on Dualité (for those of you who don't know/remember/care, Dualité is my in-development webcomic, a genderswapped retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in early 20th century America - Cincinnati, Ohio and Savannah, Georgia in particular.)
Because some of its main characters are recent immigrants to America, there will be smatterings of different languages throughout the comic: specifically, German, Italian, and French (although the French is more in tribute to the French origins of the story.) I went out today and bought myself some little books on German and Italian phrases, as well as an English-to-German dictionary.
Now that I think of it, I've invested a fair amount of money into the development of this comic. I'm more excited about this project than any other personal project I've done. I got the idea back in 2007, and my motivation and investment in the project has only grown since then. I've bought three art books, four language books, two history books, two books on America and esp. Ohio history in the early 20th century, and one historical biography detailing the decade in which the story is set.
I think a lot of my motivation comes from the excitement of knowing that, for the first time, I have an interesting, unique idea, a different way of telling it, a set of characters, a time period I love, and a vague storyline, but most importantly: I know how my beginning, middle, and end will go.
It's all very exciting! *dives back in*
Day Four of Operation: Lose Weight is still going well! I woke up late and actually felt filled up after just a turkey sandwich and small salad, and all I've had since then is a strawberry banana smoothie from Caribou Coffee (best. drink. ever. ever.). Because it was so awesome last night, I'm making tilapia again with the little bit of rice I have left from yesterday, along with slices of herb-y zucchini. *__*
