The Character
Character Name: Rebecca Chambers
Character Journal:
inweskersdesk Canon: Resident Evil
Age: 18
Race: Human
Timeline: Just after the events in RE:0, when she falls asleep in the mansion from sleep deprivation and going through hell. Before the events of RE:1 and before she’s shot by her commanding officer, so she’s still pretty trusting of people.
Abilities/Powers: At first glance, Rebecca is your average, ordinary 18-year-old. In many ways she is. She doesn’t have any special powers or even above average strength. However, despite her appearance, she’s a genius, a child prodigy. She graduated at the age of 18 with degrees in biochemistry and medicine. In the world of Resident Evil, she’s even able to combine red and green herbs into a powerful med spray, strong enough to fix everything from topical scrapes to zombie bites.
Power Limitations: She doesn’t really have any powers to limit, but if you would prefer, the strength of the med spray can be weakened.
Inventory: Her beloved medical kit which contains basic supplies including gauze, antiseptic, bandages, needle and thread, all the usual odds and ends plus a few oddities from the Resident Evil universe: a can of med spray, green and red herbs for making medicine and a small packet of the seeds. She also has Marine Lieutenant Billy Coen’s dog tags, and a walkie-talkie, temporarily at least, but she did lose her gun (like a brilliant officer) so she’s without that.
Personality: First and foremost, Rebecca Chambers is intelligent and thoughtful. She graduated university at the age of 18 with an expertise is chemistry and medicine. She is capable of understanding advanced equations and is highly adept at medicine both in theory and in practice. It is this expertise that gets her recruited into the Raccoon City STARS Bravo team as the medic, right out of college.
Despite all of her intelligence Rebecca is very inexperienced. She’s sent on her first and fateful mission not long after joining the team. She’s very nervous both around her teammates and in the field. Because of this she makes a lot of mistakes, from falling into holes to hesitating and letting the convict she was sent to find escape.
As she is the smallest and weakest of the team, she can’t rely on her strength for her survival. Even the recoil of a rifle is too much for her small frame and knocks her back a few inches when she fires. Instead she has to depend on her wits to solve problems, as well as on other people to lend her a hand or a shoulder.
When faced with uncertain, and often terrifying events, she approaches slowly and carefully, trying to take in every detail before reacting. At the start of the disaster, when she’s first thrown into the chaos of zombie slugs and runaway trains, she’s easily scared, usually screaming and freezing on the spot, not having the time to think she’s accustomed to. But as the adventure progresses, she grows to be more at ease with the situation and is able to think through and make calm decisions.
Being so young and so green she easily comes off as naïve, always wanting to see the best in people and never giving up. This quickly becomes one of her strengths making her both loyal to the people she trusts and willing to push herself harder even when the situation seems impossible.
History: Very little of Rebecca’s pre game history is ever given. At 18 she graduated college and was quickly recruited into the elite Special Tactics And Rescue Service (Or STARS) of the Raccoon City Police department. Her first real mission as part of the Bravo Team of STARS was to investigate reports of cannibalistic murders in the Arklay Mountains. Upon their arrival in the mountains they discovered an overturned military escort vehicle with evidence that the convict, a Marine Corps Lieutenant charged with the murder of twenty-three people, Billy Coen. The mission quickly turned into a manhunt. The team split up to search and Rebecca was sent off on her own.
With Rebecca’s luck, and this being a video game, the diminutive officer is the first to find him, after boarding a train that turns out to be full of slug ridden zombies. And because this is a Capcom game, things can only get worse from there. Shortly thereafter, the train starts hurtling away with no visible way to stop it and Rebecca and Billy have to form a reluctant partnership in order to survive.
After fighting their way through the train, and then through the testing facility that the train crashes headlong into, as well as constantly bickering with each other, Billy and Rebecca are able to escape the facility. On the way, Rebecca learns that Billy had been framed for the murders but there was no way to prove it, so in a selfless move that could compromise herself and her position, she takes his dog tags and tells him that “Lieutenant Billy Coen is now dead,” setting him free from certain death, and parting with a salute and a smile.
In an effort to reunite with the remaining STARS team, Rebecca makes her way to the Spencer Estate where she had been told the others would meet up. Upon her arrival, no one is there, and finding a room with a bed, she lies down to wait and quickly surrenders to her exhaustion after a long night of terror and falls asleep.
First Person Sample: [The camera flickers on, showing a girl, barely 18 but wearing combat gear and a tan vest with a red cross, awakening slowly and moaning. She turns, stops, checks herself, and picks up a broken walkie-talkie that had been lying just under her hip. She pokes at it and sighs. Broken. She looks around, fear of the unfamiliar location growing in her eyes. She sees the little device in the box and scrambles over to pick it up.
At first her voice trembles slightly but quickly becomes firm and resolved.]
Hello, this is Officer Rebecca Chambers with the STARS Bravo team. I…don’t know where I am right now or if this is even working… My last known location was in a mansion in the Arklay Mountains were I was to meet up with the Alpha Team but someone or something seems to have transported me in the night. If anyone is in range, please respond.
Please be working…and please don’t be more zombies…
Write it out Sample:
The first thing Rebecca was aware of was screaming. Screaming and falling. And then suddenly pain, then darkness.
Moments later, or perhaps hours, she wasn’t sure, she slowly opened her eyes. The screaming (which she was ashamed to realize had been her own) had stopped and the pain at her hip was reduced to a dull ache. She turned gingerly to inspect herself. There were no obvious injuries but the pouch at her waist felt odd. She pulled out the walkie-talkie, now sparking slightly and cracked in various places. Broken. She almost laughed. Who would have thought that ‘the lightweight rookie’ could break something just by landing on it. But her only method of communication was now gone.
She looked around, trying to gather her wits while taking stock of her situation. This definitely wasn’t the Spencer Estate…but where was it? And how had she gotten here? Her eyes fell on a box with an odd little device peaking out, the camera at the top seeming to stare at her. If it had a camera, there might be a way to communicate, right? She scrambled over to the box and picked the device up. Before turning to it, she noticed several other items, all equally strange, a candle, feather, and a little scrap of paper. She set the device down in her lap and picked up the paper, turning it over to read “Welcome to Icarus.” How strange…she had never heard of any place with that name. Icarus was…she contemplated a moment, trying to remember what one of her professors had said. Icarus was the boy in Greek mythology whose father had made him wings to escape Crete…or was it Rhodes? She had been covertly working on biochem homework during that particular lecture. The professor had been brilliant…but could make even Greek Epics dull.
Setting the slip of paper down to consider later, she lifted the device back up and looked directly into the camera, praying that it worked. She took a deep breath to steady her nerves and spoke.
“Hello, this is Officer Rebecca Chambers with the STARS Bravo team. I…don’t know where I am right now …or if this is even working… My last known location was in a mansion in the Arklay Mountains were I was to meet up with the Alpha Team but someone or something seems to have transported me in the night. If anyone is in range, please respond.”
Her voice faltered and she whispered, “Please be working…and please don’t be more zombies…”
She set the device back down on her knees and stared out at the unfamiliar world.
Other Notes: I hope you enjoyed my app! As for how I heard about this lovely place, I was dragged in by the Jill, who I believe was dragged in by the Chris, so we’ll (hopefully) have a nice, if somewhat dysfunctional, Resident Evil family.
