venezia

Hello.. I'm here in Venice staying with my uncle on his boat until wednesday, at which point I go back to Germany for orientation and classes. Venice fucking ridiculously beautiful, and more picture esque than I'd imagined. I've had the privelige of eating dinner at this superitalian guy's house with my uncle. We ate some fish that he had caught himself that same day, and I listened to them speak italian amongst themselves and imagined what it was doing to my german. Eroding the fuck out of it, apparently, since today I thought "kein lluvia heute" which is definitely a mix of German and spanish for "no rain today"

My uncle hasn't really changed since I last sailed with him 3 summers or so ago on the french riviera with my brother. We got along much less well then, although he can be pretty annoying at times. He relentlessly quotes my grandmother whom he is still hopelessly in love with 7 years after her passing. Her little one-liners are fun to remember at least... "The swiss are only happy when they're going to the bank with your money." And I guess he has a love for one-liners in general (Foster my brother saying to Phelps my uncle, "Phelps, if you don't buy more wine than you drink, there won't be any left").

Yesterday we went to a handful of Catholic churches (pardon me if I offend anyone by saying that Catholosism is kind of freaky here in venice) and to Academia, a museum where Napoleon stashed a bunch of paintings and is still home to all of the traditional italian painters and whatnot... and everyone we meet, no matter how little he knows them, says "this is my nepote, he has a good eye for Tintorelli, he studies in Germania," and I sit there silently. Conversations crash and burn when people stop to translate for me, so maybe I should just not be in Italy, haha. Today the Internet and a Spritz (venetian snares i mean drink.. wine, fruitiness, sparkling water, twice a day!!).. tomorrow some Guggenheim modern art and sunglasses. I must close... everyone should email me so I can blab to someone concrete.
