Something Good (Tatennant)

I recommend you guys listen to this song while you read it because I listened to it while writing, and it gave me the feels. I want Tatennant to re-create this moment in the film but until then, I’ll live in my head.

Oh! This wouldn’t have happened without sweet Georgie who has so kindly helped me with this. I swear, I didn’t know how to write this until I talked to her about it. Thank you, sweetheart!

All right, enough jibber jabber from me. Enjoy!
“For here you are standing there loving me…”

David stops dead in his tracks outside of the school’s small theatre and peeks into the room through the ajar doors. There, in the middle of the stage, in the middle of the lights, stands a girl with hair like fire and a voice of an angel.

“Somewhere in my youth or childhood…”

Her voice like a siren song draws him into the room and towards the stage. “I must have done something good,” David sings softly, harmonizing with her with a small smile on his face before she notices his presence in the room.

“I’m sorry,” he winces as she leaps away from him with a gasp. “I didn’t mean to sneak up on you.” He immediately feels bad for intruding. Her creamy skin turns pink and her originally soft eyes widened upon seeing him. “I heard you singing from outside. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s…it’s fine,” she breathes, her hands over her heart. “I didn’t think anyone else would be around.”

“I’m David, by the way.”

“Catherine.”

“Are you practising for the audition next week?” She nods shyly and he smiles. “I’m sure you’ll be one of the front runners, you sound like an angel.” He frowns when she keeps her eyes on her shoes and everywhere else instead on him. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No!” Catherine shakes her head and tucks an errant lock of hair behind her ears, “not at all. You’re very kind but I think I need more practice. I can’t get the last part right.”

“It sounds perfect to me,” he confesses breezily and she blushes. “If you don’t mind, we could practice together. I’m auditioning too.”

“For Maria?” she asks with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.

“Oh yes,” he replies with a laugh and a dramatic twirl, “I think I’m perfect for the part, don’t you think?”

She laughs freely and he thinks her laughter sounds just as mellifluous as her singing. “Yes,” she nods, “you’re the best I’ve ever seen. Maybe even better than the great Julie Andrews.”

“One can dream,” he tells her with a wink, eliciting soft giggles from her.

An awkward silence settles over them again and David clears his throat with a small smile. “Would you like to practice together?” he asks again, eagerly but gently so as to not seem pushy. “I’ve been practising alone and it’d be nice to have a partner. I’d love to hear some feedback from someone other than my mum…but I can go if you’re not comfortable with it.”

Catherine tucks her bottom lip between her teeth and wrings her hands nervously. She has never practised with anyone before. It has always been just her and her mirror in the privacy of her own room. The only reason she pushed herself to practice in the theatre today is because she wanted to familiarize herself with the venue, in hopes that she will feel a little less nervous on the big audition day.

Then walks in a tall boy with a cute smile and an even cuter sense of humour wanting to practise with her. She looks up at him nervously and takes deep, shaky breath before nodding slowly. After all, she will need to get used to having an audience if she wants to get the part.

“Are…are you sure?”

“Yes. I’m…sure.” David narrows his eyes but says nothing and she sighs, “I’m just nervous. I’ve never sung in front of anyone before.”

“You might as well start now, Catherine,” he encourages her gently, “you are going to be performing in front of the whole school.”

“The auditions are not till next week and I might not get the part, David.”

He shrugs, “But then again, you might. I hope we both get the part because I’d love to sing with you, Catherine. I think you’re the perfect Maria for me.”

Catherine’s cheeks turn a lovely shade of pink and runs her fingers through her wavy hair. “Well, we’d better practice if we want the part, Captain.”

David smiles brightly at the title and finds himself standing taller before her, puffing his chest out ever so slightly.

“Pick a song, sweet Maria.”
