My very first instalment of the
Plane Sexy AU.
It’s John’s very first take off as a full fledged pilot but by the end of the day, it’s not the most exciting thing he’s done.
Georgie has very kindly beta’d this for me. This would still have just remained as a fantasy in my head if not for you and
basmathgirl's encouragement. Thank you, dearies :D
“Did you hear? There’s a new pilot joining us today.”
“Yes, I’m sure he’s very nice,” Donna replies absently mindedly, and tries her best to resist the urge to roll her eyes at Nerys’ excitement. A squeal in her ear and a firm grip on her arm snaps the ginger out from her little reverie and she finds herself locking eyes with whom she thinks is their new colleague.
His excitement is sparkling in his eyes and Donna has no doubt that this is his first official take off as a full fledged pilot. His hair looks about as excited as he is, sticking out like that. After a quick introduction - and a few less than appropriate comments about him from Nerys - they break off to prepare for the passengers coming on board.
John grins like a kid in the candy store as he settles himself into pilot’s seat and looks over at his captain, the ever stoic Alec Hardy. While many think that it is unfortunate to be flying with him because he’s so serious, he thinks he rather likes it. He’s the most experienced pilot around and this will be quite the learning experience for him.
“Focus,” Alec says evenly. “Don’t get too excited.”
“Oh, yes!”
They do a quick routine check of the plane and finally it’s the moment that he’s been waiting for all his life. He feels butterflies the size of bald eagles in his belly as the plane rushes down the runway and he finds himself grinning harder than he ever had in his entire life when he feels the nose of plane tilting heavenwards. Before he knows it, he’s switching off the ‘seatbelt’ light and they’re in the air, above the clouds and flying over oceans.
Finally, Donna thinks to herself. The last of the passengers - even the most fussy one - has fallen asleep and she can finally rest too. They have many more hours before they reach their destination and she’s ready to sleep until the next flight back home once she reaches her hotel. Nerys is already sleeping like a log in her seat and as much as Donna would like to sleep, there has to be someone to be awake in case god forbid one of the passengers wakes up and asks for something. Just her luck to be partners with her again. Donna glares at her friend’s sleeping form half-heartedly when John comes into her station.
“Oh, hello,” he smiles tiredly, “Don’t mind me. I’m just in here for some tea.”
“Let me get that for you,” she says before he can protest, happy to have something to do.
John smiles his thanks as he takes the hot tea from her. “We haven’t been introduced properly. I’m Jonathan Smith,” he declares and holds his hand out. “Call me John.”
“Donna Noble.” She takes his hand and revels in the warmth radiating from him.
“Don’t tell anyone, but as much as I love flying,” he whispers with a silly grin, “it’s getting quite awkward in the cockpit. I think I can almost hear the space crickets.”
Donna laughs unrestrainedly then looks over at Nerys’s sleeping form and is suddenly grateful that she can sleep through a marching band. “That’s Captain Alec for you,” she shrugs, “but he is one of the best ones around.”
“He really is. Did you know he was the one who passed me?”
“He was your examiner?” He nods in response and she’s suddenly very impressed by this young pilot. “You must be really good. He’s notorious for being awfully strict when it comes to new pilots.”
“Years of experience. Remote control planes,” he explains. Donna spots a mischievous twinkle in his eye and grins. “Do you think, it’s okay if you don’t want to,” he says shyly after a moment, his previous confidence slipping away, “after we get to Japan, you might want to join me for dinner? I’d like to talk to someone with more experience about flying with Alec and you haven’t slapped me for being this excited yet.”
If Donna didn’t think he was cute before this exchange, she definitely thinks it now. “I’d love to.” John’s beaming at her and yes, he’s very cute now. “But wouldn’t you want to talk to someone with more experience?” she asks quietly. “Maybe Nerys? I’ve only joined the company a few months ahead of you, I don’t know how much I can help.”
“I’d rather talk to you,” he replies easily.
A blush spreads through Donna’s form like a plague and she is helpless against it. “Okay.”
“Great!”
“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather talk to another pilot?” She looks at him, a little unsure of herself now. “I mean, you’re flying a plane and I’m just serving tea. It’s not like my job’s as important as yours.”
“No!” John looks at her like she has grown another head. “You’re important too! I mean, without you, we wouldn’t be able to fly the plane in peace. Can you imagine Alec serving tea?”
“Not in a million years,” she laughs.
“Exactly,” he grins. “We need you. Besides,” he leans in to whisper in her ears and she finds herself holding her breath. “I don’t think we’d look very nice in your uniform.” She’s laughing again and John finds that he quite enjoys making her laugh. “I should get back,” he announces, a bit reluctantly though if Donna sees it correctly.
“Yeah. Wouldn’t want Grumpy to send out a search party for you.”
“Grumpy?”
“Don’t tell him that.”
“Never.”
As John makes his way back to the cockpit, he thinks that flying as a full fledged pilot for the first time is now the second most exciting thing he has ever done today because talking a pretty ginger has gone to the top of that list.
