Miscellany

I'm going hiking in two days and I'm 90% packed and bored. I figured it was an okay time to waste time on LJ.

1) Eight new graffiti photos up. The orange one with the turtle on it is my favourite of this recent lot!

2) Some things I found in my officespace at uni:

I think you're getting the knack of charcoals. Well done on that! I particularly like the shine on Selphie's hair.

But what I'd really like to see? More detail in the faces. I'm not really getting a sense of what you look like, despite the eight self-portraits.

Also, the cropping's a bit close on the sides, but that photo of the postcard is really good. I like the diagonal composition of it--the way the eye can trace the magnets down to the handle. The lighting, which I suspect is nothing more than indirect sunlight, is just right--subtle, not too glaring, doesn't wash out the colors.

Well, thank you for encouraging me to get into charcoals more. ^^

I see what you mean about the detail; in any case, none of the eight really look like me (the closest I've gotten is the last one on this page). I'm always hesitant in filling in faces on figure drawings- often it's the thing I do last and I loathe to mess up the drawing! I can't seem to capture my own facial features consistently yet. It probably means that I'm drawing what I think I see instead of looking more carefully and drawing what's actually there. Something else to practice. ^^ Can you capture your own features consistently?

And ah, thanks! The lighting was indeed indirect sunlight (around 4pm on a summery afternoon, to be precise). You're right about the close cropping. I looked at the first shot I took of the postcard and while it's lost some of the magnets, the shape of the postcard is a bit better there.

That's me-preaching the gospel of charcoals since 1995.

I hate to get all personal here, but do you like the way you look? That may have something to do with your self-portrait woes. It may have nothing to do with skill and everything to do with a reluctance to see yourself as a work of art./psychoanalysis (emphasis on psycho Or maybe you just need more practice. :) And yes, the link is a much more detailed drawing of you. Very nice! May I ask, what ethnicity are you?

Preach it!

No worries, personal questions doesn't bother me if I know who they're coming from. ^^ Frankly, I do like the way I look most of the time, although when I was younger I didn't so much. Valid point about the seeing self as art/psychoanalysis; it could be that. Let's see...I've tried drawing my family at different times and have found it hard to capture all of their likenesses! This makes me think it's also needing more practice. ^^ I'm Chinese-- my parents are from Singapore, and I was born here in Australia and have lived here all my life.

It's totally irrelevant here, but how about yourself? I remember your photo on dA and you have very pretty hair! I could also see, like, less than 10% of your face. XD (I'm off hiking, so seeya when I return!)

I'm Korean. And my hair's been chopped off, so it's more serviceable than pretty these days. :(

Oh, and I'm a pro at capturing myself. I didn't have the luxury of people posing for me, so guess what? I got fairly adept at self-portraits. I think we should have a self-portrait day someday. What do you think?

Sorry about the late reply- I'm now back in civilisation!

Know what you mean about the hair; long is sadly not too practical. Mine can be tamed with a braid, which keeps it servicable.

A big YES to your self-portrait day. What would that entail, exactly?

I'm not sure. It'll probably amount to an announcement on my LJ once I get a drawing mood back.
