Prompt: Since the police really didn't help during the murder investigation... describe an average day at the police station.

"Say, when do you think they'll install the air conditioners?" Adachi says curiously, fanning himself with a manila folder. It's August in Inaba, hot and humid; even the cicadas are too tired to chirp.

Dojima looks up from his papers. "Maybe when you stop complaining and finish sorting those files you can complain, but for now you've got work to do."

"Right, sorry, sir," and maybe he is and maybe he isn't, but he doesn't mention it again, busying himself with alphabetical organization and unsolved cases.

Between paragraphs (sometimes sentences, though he wouldn't admit it easily), Dojima watches his assistant thoughtfully, resting his chin on his clenched fist. Adachi is a diligent worker, when he wants to be, but also, he thinks, much too - how would he even put it

"I'm talking about a deal, of course."

The moon is high over Ikebukuro's starless skies and the alleyways below are crammed full of shadows and dark corners you wouldn't enter alone. But up here, the moonlight shines against the chain link Masaomi Kida is leaning against, casting shaking lines of light across the smiling features of a certain informant.

"Nothing big, of course," Izaya continues, hands in the pockets of his coat. "Just a bit of information, that's all."

"And you had to drag me up here in the dead of night to ask for that?" Kida grimaces. "You could have just called me."

Not that I would have answered, he thinks.

"That would be too easy."

Of course. It was so like him. "Fine, I'll bite, what do you want to know?"

Izaya smirks, or rather his ever-present smirk increases exponentially. "Everything you know about Ryuugamine Mikado."

Kida almost nods with agreement before he realizes what's just been said. "Hell no. He's got nothing to do with any of this

Eventually, he will disappoint her. He is no gentleman, he is loud, impolite, has a habit of saying the wrong thing at the right time. Eventually, a word will be said at the wrong time, some important occasion (don't girls, like, count the days after you start dating? Man, i'll never understand them) will be missed and it'll all come tumbling down.

So, when she reaches for his hand, he pulls away; he makes excuses (I have to go help at work, I promised I'd study with Souji, Dad wants me home early); he runs when she calls, because he knows one day he'll break her heart and lose her.
