luau offering for ozmissage - juliet POV fic

Here is a belated Lost drabble for Queen ozmissage, who requested Lost Ladies (and Juliet in particular). I found her relationship with Jack in the sideways universe very interesting, so I decided to explore that back story a bit. Please forgive its lateness, and I hope you enjoy! :D

Juliet supposed it didn’t really make a great deal of sense to anyone else, her and Jack’s divorce. They had a wonderful son, they were both doctors at the same hospital, and for the most part, they got along famously. In fact, she still loved Jack, and she would wager a guess that he still loved her too, and always would.

They had met during medical school. He was straight-laced and driven, desperately trying to prove himself. Unfortunately, this came at the heavy cost of his social life, irritating nearly everyone with whom he came in contact. She took pity on him, taking it upon herself to make him crack a smile and maybe even laugh once in awhile whenever she had the chance.

From there had blossomed a tight-knit friendship that eventually led them to what they believed to be the next natural step - sleeping together. Their relationship continued to develop and it was an all-around fun time for them. They were both acing medical school and able to do so alongside a companion going through the same trials. A few weeks after their graduation, Jack popped the question, and they were married a few months later in a very simple, understated ceremony, much to the chagrin of both of their mothers.

Juliet became pregnant with David during their residencies, and of course everyone thought it was the greatest thing in the world to have a pregnant obstetrician. Her patients absolutely loved it.

Things continued relatively smoothly during the first years of David’s life. He brought Juliet and Jack more fulfillment than either of them could ever have imagined. They had a beautiful son, successful careers, and a lovely house. To anyone else, they basically had it all.

Which is why it came as such a shock to everyone who knew them when they announced that they were separating. There had just been something that neither of them seemed able to place a finger upon that made their family feel more like two best friends playing house than a legitimate marriage.

Everyone told them they were crazy, that looking for more than they already had - a partnership with someone whose company they actually enjoyed - was just foolish; selfish, even.

But she didn’t expect them to understand. She and Jack had come to the easy agreement that there’s simply wasn’t a romantic relationship, at least not anymore. Juliet was the first to admit, and Jack soon after, that both of them had a lingering feeling that their respective soul mates were still out there somewhere waiting.

It had been perhaps the most drama-free divorce of all time. They hadn’t even bothered with lawyers. Both of them were on a doctor’s salary by that point, and they agreed that there was really no need for a bunch of messy legal jargon when they could easily settle everything on their own.

David was three at the time, and they made a pact then that they would both do everything in their power to stay in the area until he graduated from high school, at the very least. With both of them coming from troubled childhoods, she and Jack didn’t want any part of their (admittedly unconventional) relationship decision to cause their son stress. So after they sold their home, they each downsized and picked new places within twenty minutes of the other.

Clearly, they had joint custody of David. And while Juliet hated that her son’s relationship with his father had been a bit strained in the past years, she figured it was likely part of each of them dealing with the fact that David was a young man now more than anything else. Things seemed to be on the ups between the two of them since his last visit to Jack’s anyway.

It was now fourteen years later, and while both she and Jack had casually dated, neither of them had found the life-changing romance for which they had dissolved their marriage. On her bad days, she sometimes wondered if perhaps they had made a horrible mistake. That finding another person that completes and complements you entirely simply isn’t something that happens for everyone.

But the truth of the matter was, both she and Jack were incurable romantics. And she knew, with a little patience, the right one would come along for each of them.
