I am a total fail and just now getting to my first luau offering *facepalm* Is that catch up day here yet?? ;)
This is for Queen
bittersweet325, who requested "Richard in the Modern World". I hope it pleases her majesty!!
Richard maintains a white-knuckled grip on the arm rest and grits his teeth as Frank begins their descent toward the first piece of flat land he can find off the western coast of the United States. He believes he is perhaps more nervous for their arrival than he was during their shaky departure from the island. At least the island was familiar. This world that he’s about to enter is entirely new. And he is entirely alone.
Sure, he’s lived in this world before. But everything was already decided for him. He was given agendas and clothing and expense accounts by forces greater than himself. He didn’t have to ask questions. He barely even had to think. But now he is just another one of the millions of modern, aging humans who used to exist as such a marvel to him.
Now that the reality of what will happen when they get off of this plane is starting to sink in, Richard can feel his heartbeat pounding in his ears. He quite obviously has no living family or friends. He has a moderate set of skills (a few centuries’ experience will usually warrant as such) but no real references to back them up. To be honest, he has absolutely no idea what’s to happen to him when he gets of this plane.
He feels as if he’s well on his way to hyperventilating when a voice filters through the muddled haze in his head. “Hey man, watch out. You’re going to break a finger or something.”
Richard smiles nervously at Miles and loosens his grip on the armrest as they continue their descent. Miles - the only one of this motley crew who trusted him enough (although god knows why) to follow him into the jungle to torch the very plane that was actually delivering them to their new lives. Whether you want to chalk it up to free will or fate or karma or whatever - life can be a funny thing sometimes.
“I imagine you don’t know where you’re headed when we touch down, do you?” Miles asks.
Richard figures there isn’t much use in lying at this point. Pride seems a little foolish after all they’ve been through. “Not really.”
“Well, I don’t know what kind of perks one receives as an Other, and I can’t promise you anything too fancy, but I was planning on staying at the nicest hotel I can find while I look for a new apartment since I sure as hell got evicted from the last shithole I was living in while we were busy flying through time on that damn island. Anyway, what I’m saying is, I figure you don’t have a hell of a lot of options about where to stay, so you could, you know, stay with me. For awhile. If you wanted.”
Richard flinches when they touch down with a jolt. But when he opens his eyes, Miles is still there, the offer still standing.
Maybe this new life isn’t going to be so impossible after all.
