anitpodes
went out to excercise my legs and mind today. hit up some galleries downtown. i'll spare you the details... except i just had to persue the jim sanborn madness. this piece (called antipodes) is outside at the hirshorn:
one side contains a coded message in cyrillic characters relating to the kgb, while the other side, coded in english characters, relates to the cia. the english message is the same as kryptos at the cia (in fact the word is plainly woven into the text), while the russian side contains a repeat from another sculpture alongside a new message... several crytophiles are hard at work trying to decipher the final 98-character section of the english side which is the only part that has yet to be solved.
i had passed by this sculture before i knew what it was... and today i just had to go back. this piece nicely expresses a covert aspect of our culture, with reference to the cold war. i freak for the cold war, and secrecy. and i'll say it again. we are returning to a cold war mentality. new world order, indeed.
