I propose a website wherein ideas for projects, artistic or whatever, can be donated to the public. It would be divided into categories like "songs," "movies/plays," "books," "inventions," "furniture," "philosophy," etc. It would be a clearing house for people who are adept in the conceptual but not in the practical (like me). For example, this morning I came up with the idea for a movie or play called "Mixtape," a somewhat twee story of a girl who receives an anonymous mixtape in her locker at the end of the school day and spends the rest of the afternoon listening to it, talking with her friends about it, trying to decode the message and discover who her paramour is, all soundtracked by the songs on the mixtape (the film/play would have to take place, at the latest, in the mid-'90's for the concept of a mixTAPE to actually work, so I'm thinking lots of K/Teenbeat-style indie pop). Now, I'm not actually going to write this thing. But on freeideas.com, I could write up my brief synopsis, post it under "movies/plays," and wait until some uninspired auteur, looking for a subject, logs in and discovers it. S/he could credit me for my idea if they wish, but it would not be required. Or there would be a way for the idea-creators to indicate if they want to be credited or not. Whatever. I would certainly use it for song ideas, because sometimes you're in that mood to create something but you need a grain of an idea to start with and your brain just isn't cooperating. I would hope that in addition to specific ideas like the one I listed above, there would be some that would be more Oblique Strategies-esque, like "Start at the end," etc.
Of course, the main obstacle as usual is my own lack of motivation and website-creating skills. So consider this post Free Idea #1. If anyone wants to run with it and make freeideas.com, I give you my blessing.
