I started this, basically, to write about and share music I like with people I like.
Okay. here we go!:
A few years ago, reading a review of the U.S. debut of the J-pop duo Puffy (known here as Puffy AmiYumi), a name stood out that was neither Ami nor Yumi, or even Japanese. Many of their best, catchiest songs, it seems, were written by an American named Andy Sturmer, and he had apparently had an obscure but critically acclaimed power-pop band in the early 1990s called
Jellyfish. The critic writing the review obviously had been a fan, so I decided to check them out.
And they're amazing. One of the best pop-rock bands I've ever heard, for sure. The only reason they weren't and aren't better known was that they were completely out of step with most of what was popular at the time. Even though they're long gone (they broke up in 1994), this is a band that more people ought to hear, because they're wonderful and fun and classic-sounding.
