Somewhere near the desert city of Lior, the Full Metal Alchemist Edward Elric was busy dying of thirst.
His mission was to stop the rouge Ishbalan, Scar, from doing, well, something horrible. Not sure what just yet, but he was certainly planning something. And Edward Elric, hero of the people, was going to be the one to thwart his evil plan.
But first he had to get there and find him.
However, he was so painfully thirsty that his prodigious brain had stopped functioning properly, and all he could think about was his need for water. Sure, he could just clap his hands and create a well or something, but doing such a thing would be his downfall and he knew it. His own personal brand of Alchemy was easily recognizable, so that if he dared to use it, Scar would likely flee the city, leaving the journey a complete waste of time.
“I can wait, I guess.” He said, coughing hoarsely and stuffing his gloved hands into his pockets. The sandy wind nearly blew off his dark wig, but he held it and trudged up the steep dune. Reaching the top, he looked out over the vast wasteland, and once his eyes had adjusted to seeing distances again, he spotted Lior before him, much closer than he had expected it to be.
“That was the longest two miles I’ve ever walked! It feels like I’ve been walking for hours!” he instinctively grabbed in his pocket for his silver military pocket watch, but then remembered that he had left it back with the Colonel. That bastard. How was he supposed to tell the time? He shrugged, adjusted his wig and borrowed clothes, and made his way into town.

The first thing Ed did when he got into Lior was find a place to get some food and water. He was nearly recognized by the old bartender, since he and his younger brother Alphonse had been there a few years before and had eaten at the same spot. But Edward just laughed it off, and tried to stay quiet incase someone else he knew showed up.
While he was in the middle of dinner, a group of young women in white robes came by, and all the people around him stopped to watch them pass in silence. Ed turned to see what was going on, and was surprised to see his friend Rose in the center of the group. Immediately he downed his glass of water, left some cash on the bar, and ran off after them. Eventually he lost sight of their candles in the darkness, and assuming they were heading towards the rundown church in the center of town, he turned down an alleyway as a shortcut.
He ran down the streets as fast as he could, but still being a bit dehydrated from his walk through the desert, he had to stop to catch his breath near the end of one of the dark alleys. He looked up to see the church a couple blocks way.
He breathed heavily and asked himself out loud, “Wonder where the hell Scar’s hiding?” And at just that moment, a dark, cloaked figure appeared from the shadows behind him, and with one strong hand smashed Edward’s head into the wall just hard enough to put him out cold, and then dragged him off into the night.

When he awoke, he found himself face to face with Scar, who was in fact the dark mysterious figure from the alleyway. Edward wondered how he hadn’t seen that coming.
“Maybe I’m still dehydrated.” He thought out loud.
Rose and Lyra were there, too.
Wait- what was Lyra doing there? Oh well. It’s probably nothing important.
Scar proceeded in telling Ed his plan, which was to create a Philosopher’s Stone from a bunch of unsuspecting military soldiers using the entire city of Lior as the transmutation circle. Having heard this, Ed was in such shock at the idea that he didn’t even notice when Lyra walked him out of the church, and then out of the whole city. By the time Edward was fully aware of things again, they were making their way through some secret tunnels with Rose, her baby, and the everyone else from the city following behind. To make things even stranger, all of a sudden a seven-foot tall suit of armor ran up to them, grabbed Ed, and hugged him.
“Damnit, Al! Put me down!” yelled Edward, squirming to escape his younger brother’s arms.
The armor set him down. “Oh. Sorry brother.” He reached inside his empty chest plate, and handed something shiny to his shorter but older sibling. “Here. Colonel Mustang told me to give this back to you. Well, actually the Colonel was sleeping, so Lieutenant Hawkeye gave me the message.” He laughed.
Edward took the pocket watch, stuck it back into his pocket, and smiled a “thanks” at his brother.
Lyra came up and faced hem both sternly. “Sorry to break up this nice little reunion, but we have to leave the city before the military gets here.”
As they continued walking, Ed told Al what was going on, and a watery figure fell back into the shadows.
“Hey brother, why don’t we head home to Resembool for a while? We could visit Winry and Granny!” suggested Alphonse.
“Why not? We could sure use a break!”
