30 Days of Torchwood: Day Eleven - Your favo(u)rite couple
I'm an inveterate slasher; I've got a soft spot for any number of pairings. Canonically, though? I'm going to have to go with process of elimination.
- Owen and Diane? Hot, but wildly asymmetrical. Poor Owen.
- Owen and Gwen? Naughty, kind of sexy, but ultimately not really about them.
- Tosh and Mary? Hot, but dating someone who wants to literaly rip your heart out? Bad choices.
- Tosh and Tommy? Still hot, but Tommy is so Toshiko's Diane.
- Tosh and Adam? Brought us some of the best cleavage on television, but yet another data point for bad choices.
- Tosh and Owen? Tons of depth and longing there, but tragically a star-crossed non-starter.
- Jack and John? Can they fight some more? Can I watch? Please? Definitely winning for sexiest exes.
- Jack and Gwen? Loving the awkward, romantic friendship, but emphatically not a couple.
- Jack and Ianto? It's love, because nobody's willing to sacrifice an entire planet for something that isn't love. I'm just not sure they'd call it a couple. It's a partnership, but we never really get their word for it, even if they have one.
Which leaves Gwen and Rhys. Which...is not a disappointment for me, actually. Gwen and Rhys are maybe the most interesting, complex, affectionate, real couple I've seen on television since Wash and Zoe on Firefly. There's genuine affection there. Both of them are wiling to fight Torchwood, aliens, anything for the other. And, since finding out that what Gwen really does, Rhys has eventually become her equal. (He's also smart enough not to join Torchwood.)
But yeah. They're A++ awesome. They're the sort of couple I look at and think, "Yeah. I wouldn't mind being in love again one of these days."
