17: Calamity

[Just as the sun begins to set, when it seems like most of the chaos has subsided, there's suddenly a new sound amidst the cacophony the earthquake has brought. Cries; cries that sound explicitly not human, from roars to gurgles, to battle cries in a foreign tongue. Following these cries are the demons who made them, wanting nothing more than to ( Read more... )

[Mercy. It's a word that doesn't even exist in her dictionary. No mercy for the enemy should ever be given. As soon as he starts chanting the spell she takes smaller pieces of the debris from the boulders and starts hurling it at the guard.

She isn't going to let this one go.]

For all your troubles, let me reward you. You called me an unholy abomination and a witch. You're correct, on both counts likely. [her expressions twists up even more, if it's possible.] In certain worlds in darker ages, when a human was accused of being a witch or a demon they were normally given a twisted punishment that would end with their death either way. Like tying them to a boulder and pushing them into lake. If they drowned they were a human. If they were a witch they would float back up, only to face death by the hands of the condemners.

Although, there was one method that wasn't always as organized. That method was death by stoning. [As she speaks debris continues to be hurled at the guard. They aren't large enough to crush him, but aren't small enough to not do anything.] The villagers would gather around the accused witch and just throw rocks at them barbarically. No matter how much the accused would cry and plead for mercy through their dribble mouth it would continue until the person just gave up on living.

Let me give you a recreation of that death, you lowly demon who dared to challenge a witch. [The rocks become more urgent in their speed, throwing themselves towards the demon faster and faster]

Even if I die, there will be divine retribution for thou who hath murdered an Angel. [The rocks are denting his armor and flaying his feathers at this point, but Powers as stubborn as they are with their divine retribution, won't be giving in so easy.]

Magaru! [ A small wind spell with an area of effect, it's aimed at the rocks rather than Bern. But the Power is faltering, and it should be evident that this is the last spell he'll be able to cast, as futile as it is.]

Can't you just shut up and disappear already?! You're not even a real angel you miserable illusion.

[The wind pushes against the rocks, but only deters a few of the smaller ones. It doesn't stop more from coming at him, lunging towards the Power faster and faster. There's a good chance it won't even stop after he's gone, just to make sure that he returns to the depths from where he came.]

[The only bad thing for Bern is that the Power simply vanishes, rather than leaving her a mangled corpse to look at.

If she ventures inside the cave she'll find that hidden in a crevice seems to a small electronic device, that could very well pass for a handheld game system.

But if she gets too close, the device will self-destruct.]

[awww man mangled corpses are so much fun too.

A few seconds after the creature disappears the rocks quietly fall to the ground. As if they were never being carried by the mysterious force that threw them at the illusion. She doesn't dwell on it and moves towards the cave. For a moment she doesn't go inside and merely stares at the entrance.

...Is it a trap? Those things were guarding it so something must be inside worth staking their lives. But what if that's just a ruse to make her go inside and be ambushed? If she goes inside will she be made into a fool by the person controlling the lowly creatures. No. That person might not even be inside the cave. These thoughts and others run through her head, as she wonders whether she dares to go down the rabbit's hole.

......She eventually steps inside. If she waits outside like a sitting duck then it's just the same as begging to be killed. It's not too big, but it could be a good hiding spot for someone who likes this sort of accommodation. Eventually she finds the device.]

...So the cause of this nonsense was this device. Heh. I guess the Knox Decalogue doesn't apply to this world. [She just stares at it a little, her skeptical nature getting the best of her.

...If she doesn't destroy it then more might come out. This needs to be taken care of or she'll be attacked again. Fighting in such a small space won't give much advantage. So she steps forward, intending to pull it out of the crevice it's stuck in.]

[The device beeps and whirs to life, breaking the silence of the cave. Before she has a chance to touch it, the COMP explodes, shattering into pieces.

The only thing that remains are small metal shards.]

[Once the COMP begins to beep Bern's eyes widen slightly.

Dammit...-

When the explosion comes it immediately blasts Bern and vaporizes her into thin air...]

[But not even a minute later she appears again a couple feet away from the metal shards that burst. Before the blast came she replaced herself with an illusion and let it take the damage. It was just by chance that she wasn't hurt by the explosion.

Perhaps one could call it on the level of a 'miracle'.

She looks around the cavern again, before letting her eyes rest on the metal shards. She then stomps on the shards, cracking them further with every step. Just to make sure they would break and nothing would come from them again.]

How tedious. [It was strange how she was almost missing those 'angels' now. She sighs, evaporating from the cave into thin air and leaving the remains of the destroyed COMP alone.]
