Vivian Gornick's piece is breathtaking. I'm amazed at how she can portray the frenzy of the working class wait service with such elegance. Her descriptions are beautiful ("Botticelli curls" (pg 6) is a particular favorite), and I'm as taken by her depiction of daydreaming (pg 8) as she is--it's such a perfect portrayal of momentary reflection and loneliness. I like her writing a lot; it's exactly the type of thing that I wish I could do, to weave magic from the mundane. Waiting tables? Poof, engrossing! Love drama? Poof, mesmerizing! Food poisoning? Poof, enthralling! All this, and still able to end on an all-encompassing, tragic note. She's great.
