Despite its flaws, Dracula is still my favorite vampire story (and I'm a bit of a vampire connoisseur), and it's on my list of my Ten Favorite Books Ever (along with To Kill A Mockingbird and Pride and Prejudice).
My biggest issue with it, funnily enough, is Quincy the Lone American--his accent drives me bonkers. Also note that he's the only male hero who dies (figures).
If you need a laugh and you like vampires, I highly recommend the Discworld book, Carpe Jugulum. (Terry Pratchett does vampires--how could it not be awesome?) A cursory knowledge of Discword helps but isn't necessary.
Reading your recommendation of Love at First Bite reminded me favorite literary 'adaptation' and I thought I might point it out to you.
It's set three years after Queen Victoria has taken a new consort; Vlad Teppes. The last 'warm' member of Van Helsing's band still runs an asylum in the East End of London, which is wracked with the mysterious murders of several Vampire Prostitutes.
Charles Beauregard, agent of the Diogenes Club, investigates.
Yes it's me, Rhemus. It took much longer than you said to sign up.
I thoroughly enjoyed Dracula when I was 15 and then I wasted decades whingeing that the Movies got it wrong.
Trope codifier? I spy 2 xceptions. Sunlight REDUCES vampire powers in the Book and the Coppola film. Sunlight KILLS Vampires in Nosferatu, Hammer and Buffy.
Dracula is 600 years old. When he dies, he turns to dust b because the spell is destroyed. Buffy dead Vampires do not turn into week dead corpses, they turn into 600 year old piles o dust because it looks cool.
