Think of Catherine as an 17-year-old emo teenage girl of today, obsessed with vampires and horror-fantasy fiction to a high degree, and more than a little disconnected from reality, who gets invited to a friend's country retreat and becomes convinced that her friend and the friend's family are all vampires. The story's not really all that outdated :)

I think your review is spot-on. Abbey isn't my favorite Austen (that would be Persuasion) but Catherine is a humorous and even touching character to somebody who remembers what it is to be 17 and going to balls with all the pretty dresses and cute dancing partners that entails. Yes, she is foolish but charming in her own way.
