A monumental, epic, highly recommended biography of an unscrupulous, magnificent, crooked, glorious bastard of a POTUS.

I'm a librarian, and I see this series on our shelves all the time, but have never bothered to pick them up. Don't know why, as I love history! Like you, I was born during Johnson's presidency and don't remember him, but any time I watch any show about Vietnam or the Civil Rights Movement or the Sixties, his flat, down-home drawl always makes me smile (I'm a Southerner, too, so he sounds like family!). When I saw Ken Burns' Vietnam War documentary (which is outstanding!), it made me really curious about LBJ. Your review has convinced me to give these books a try. Of course, I also have to read Taylor Branch's massive study of Martin Luther King, and Rick Perlstein's books on the rise of the conservative movement under Nixon and Reagan, so these should fit right in. My to-be-read stack just keeps getting higher and higher and higher....

Thanks for the great review!

They are definitely a massive investment of time, but well worth it.
