For what it's worth, The Martian avoids the problems you're complaining about. The main protagonist is as straight, cis, and white as Weir himself, and nerds his way through the whole book.

I share some of your complaints about Artemis. My main objection is that the chemistry event at the end wouldn't work out nearly as nicely as he shows because 1. incomplete reactions would leave a lot of lethal by-products and 2. even if the stuff did react completely it wouldn't spread evenly so a lot of people would be dead from overdoses.
