this was one of my favorite books we read in class in high school, one of the ones i can still remember quite clearly. i've been meaning to re-read it sometime. interesting to see your thoughts sir :0

Have you read Matterhorn by karl marlantes? Another excellent semi-autobiographical Vietnam war novel though told more from an officers perspective and concluding with a huge badass battle sequence.

I got about halfway through We were soldiers, that's basically straight-up military history though, not a novel.
