I remember that fondly from reading it a couple of decades ago. I should probably dig it out again and see how it's held up.

I never quite got through that one - it was in the middle of my Post-apocalyptic literature class, and it turned out that On the Beach, Level Seven, and some third depressing thing I can't recall right now is all the end of the world I can take in a week's span.

One side note - Florida isn't really the South (well, except for parts of the panhandle); it's its own weird-ass region to itself. This is 100% just a fun fact, though - it's certainly "Southy" across the relevant axes here.
