Yeah, stuff like this was why I always put Max in the Lawful Neutral column (because I'm the sort of person who assigns alignments to characters even when I know it doesn't fit the world). I like a bit of anti in my hero, and the fact that Max understood the stakes he was playing for and played for keeps was something I always respected, but he also clearly suffered from some moral myopia and just plain anger issues, besides the fact that his motives couldn't really be considered good (though he was at least mature enough to acknowledge that). What I liked most about Max as a character was what he showed about how Alexandra reacts to having a family member who actually treats her like family. Sure she never completely overlooks his flaws and she doesn't let him push her around, but the fact that he's controlling and mildly bigoted doesn't ever seem to outweigh the fact that for the first time in her life someone is acting like they love her out of something other than responsibility. Lilith Grimm really should have taken notes on how to deal with Alex. Overall the whole relationship was mildly scary, as I was reading I kept thinking how easy it would be for someone like Alex to get drawn into an abusive relationship.
