No knowledge of the other authors, but Anne Perry is a solid author. Her Thomas & Charlotte Pitt novels are quite good.

For in all things there must be opposition. Maybe we need to see poorly written and constructed prose in order to appreciate the good stuff. It sounds like an interesting book to study for that reason, especially as the premise actually does sound interesting.
